New Poll: Majority of Michiganders Opposed to Controversial Data Centers

As the MPSC weighs the Saline data center, polling shows public opposition intensifies as residents learn more about the costs and consequences

MICHIGAN – On Wednesday, a new poll released by Progress Michigan shows Michiganders aren’t buying what big tech is selling when it comes to data centers, with less than a third supporting bringing more to Michigan.

“Michiganders shouldn’t have to fight this hard to protect something as basic as clean water,” said Denzel McCampbell, managing director of Progress Michigan. “Our lawmakers and policy-makers have the responsibility to protect our communities, not hand over our natural resources to greedy corporations whose data centers will drain our water, spike energy use, and offer little in return. This shouldn’t be a difficult decision: people before profits. It’s that simple.”

This evening, the Michigan Public Service Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed data center in Saline Township, and community members are mobilizing to protest the project. Many are standing in solidarity with residents in Caledonia, Wisconsin, who successfully stopped a similar development. Michiganders are demanding that decision-makers listen to the people, not greedy corporations after quick profits who don’t care about the damage they do to our communities.

Text of poll question on graphic: Data centers are essentially warehouses filled with computers used to store and process large amounts of data. With the rise in artificial intelligence, more data centers are being built across the country. Do you strong support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose more data centers being built in Michigan?
Results are below the caption.
Image has the following poll question: Proponents of data centers say they will bring jobs to Michigan. Opponents of data centers say that those jobs will largely be temporary construction jobs, the high energy needs of data centers will drive up utility costs for Michiganders, and the large amounts of water data centers need will result in water shortages for Michigan residents. Hearing this, let me ask you again: do you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, strongly oppose more data centers being built in Michigan? Results are below this question.

In concert with Progress Michigan, Public Policy Polling interviewed 796 Michigan voters from November 18-19, 2025 by phone and text. Margin of error for this poll is +/-3.5%. Full results for this poll are available upon request.
