Ingredients
Doggie Shepherd’s Pie
-
1 lb ground beef
-
2 Tbsp flour
-
1 Tbsp tomato paste
-
1 cup reduced sodium beef broth
-
½ cup corn
-
½ cup peas
-
½ cup plain breadcrumbs
-
1 large egg, beaten
-
1½ cups cooked plain mashed potatoes
-
½ cup cheese, shredded or crumbled
Directions
Doggie Shepherd’s Pie
-
Preheat oven to 400°F. Spray a pie dish with nonstick cooking spray.
-
In a large skillet or pan, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.
-
Sprinkle the cooked ground beef with the flour and toss to coat, continuing to cook for another minute. Add the tomato paste and broth and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 5 minutes or until the sauce is thickened slightly.
-
Add the corn, peas, breadcrumbs, and beaten egg and mix until thoroughly combined.
-
Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared pie dish.
-
In a large bowl, mix the mashed potatoes with the cheese until well combined. Pipe or spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the meat mixture. Place the pie onto a baking sheet.
-
Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the potatoes begin to brown. Remove the pie to a cooling rack and allow to cool completely before serving to your pup.
Note: It’s ok to use instant potatoes as long as they are 100% potato. The small amount of milk and butter won’t hurt unless your dog is lactose intolerant. In that case, just omit those ingredients.
