THE ULTIMATE 5 MINUTE HIBACHI SAUCE

It doesn’t get much easier than this recipe. One step is all it takes to make this addictive Yum Yum sauce. With just a few ingredients, you can make this delicious copycat recipe to enjoy with your Hibachi Chicken, Hibachi Steak, and Hibachi Fried Rice. I know when I hit up our local Japanese Hibachi grill, I’m all about the extra yum yum sauce with everything! It’s so good, so being able to make my own homemade version is a game changer when making homemade hibachi meals now. I’ve tried countless store bought versions but they don’t ever quite hit the mark, but this recipe is rich and well balanced.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Where do I find this Kewpie Mayonnaise in the store?

You can find the mayonnaise in the Asian section of the grocery store. This mayo has a slightly different flavor than traditional mayonnaise. Although, you can use any mayonnaise of your choice for this recipe if needed.

What if I don’t have rice vinegar?

For the vinegar, if you don’t have rice vinegar, you can use distilled, apple cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, or even red wine vinegar but the rice vinegar is going to get you closest to the taste you recognize with yum yum sauce.

How do I store homemade Yum Yum Sauce?

You can keep the sauce in a covered container (I just use a mason jar) in the fridge for up to a week.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)

  • Kewpie mayonnaise– I live in a pretty small area and I can even find Kewpie mayonnaise at Walmart and Kroger these days (see my ingredient image below.) It has a slightly tangier taste than regular mayo so if you can’t find it, you can certainly use any other mayonnaise. But, I think this brand helps get it as close to the restaurants flavor as you’re going to get.
  • ketchup – I know this sounds weird but it is an integral ingredient in yum yum sauce.
  • water
  • granulated sugar – this gives it that very slightly sweet taste that is common in this sauce. You can leave it out if you prefer or use a sugar substitute.
  • seasoned rice vinegar– I think regular white distilled vinegar is a bit stronger than rice vinegar but it can be used in a pinch. I use seasoned rice vinegar a lot so I have it on hand already. If looking in your store, it should be by the other vinegars and you may even find it in the Asian section of the store.
  • paprika – don’t use smoked paprika unless you want it to have a slightly bbq flavor.
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • cayenne pepper– this is an optional ingredient but I think it helps balance everything out with a touch of extra flavor yet not too much heat
