Easton Barbecue: Rooted in South Carolina Tradition
Nestled in the heart of Hollywood, SC, Easton Barbecue is quickly making a name for itself as a go-to spot for authentic Carolina BBQ. Founded by Joel Easton, a seasoned BBQ enthusiast turned pitmaster, this new venture offers much more than just smoked meats. It’s a story of passion, growth, and a deep love for Carolina’s rich BBQ heritage.
Joel’s journey into the world of BBQ wasn’t always a straight path. After years of bartending and even working as an x-ray tech, Joel found himself yearning for a change. A true BBQ lover at heart, he honed his skills at the former Buxton Hall Barbecue in Asheville, NC, learning from some of the best, including mentor Elliot Moss.

It was at Buxton Hall that Joel fine-tuned his craft, developing a deep respect for whole-hog BBQ and the importance of creating food that tastes good, rather than focusing on fancier culinary techniques. As Joel shared in an interview with Michael “Chigger” Willard of The Low and Slow Barbecue Show, “I just wanted to learn the basics, get thrown in the deep end, and learn how to do whole hog barbecue with Elliot Moss.”
When Buxton Hall closed, Joel saw an opportunity to bring his own take on BBQ to life—and thus, Easton Barbecue was born.
Menu Built on Tradition and Innovation
Easton Barbecue offers a comforting yet exciting take on classic BBQ, with a variety of smoked meats, homemade sides, and inventive sandwiches. From pulled pork to brisket, each dish tells a story of time-tested techniques and fresh, local ingredients.

Start with a plate of smoked chicken wings, either tossed in Ancho buffalo sauce or hot teriyaki, or dive right into the tender goodness of spare ribs, which are available by the 1/3, 1/2, or full rack. For those looking to sample a bit of everything, the 1/2 lb pulled pork and 1/2 lb brisket are popular choices, served alongside mouthwatering sides like Joel Slaw, backbone and rice, and collard greens.
For a more substantial meal, the brisket smash burger topped with horseradish, cheddar, and chipotle grilled onions is a standout choice. Or, go for the Colonel—a hearty sandwich featuring Joel’s signature pulled pork.
“There’s a lot of pride in what I do,” Joel mentioned in the interview, “and I’m really proud of my brisket. I’ve put the time into learning it, and I know I’m doing it right.”

One of the most distinct features of Easton Barbecue’s menu is its connection to Joel’s South Carolina roots. The addition of backbone and rice, a nostalgic dish inspired by his Midlands upbringing, along with pork and beans, provide a unique twist on traditional BBQ sides. Whether it’s hash and rice or the flavorful pinto beans with chorizo, the sides at Easton Barbecue give a true taste of Carolina BBQ.
And don’t forget to try Joel’s house-made sauces—each with a distinct flavor profile, including the tangy Zing N Sting, the sweet and bold Sweet Tooth, and the creamy Bama White.
Focus on Community and Craft
While the food is certainly the main attraction, Easton Barbecue is about more than just great BBQ—it’s about bringing people together.
Joel’s commitment to high-quality BBQ and his passion for the craft shine through in every bite. And while he’s just getting started, his focus on small, manageable growth and dedication to perfection are setting him up for long-term success.

“I’m still learning every day,” Joel explained. “BBQ is a constant process of learning, embracing mistakes, and continuing to improve.”
As he continues to grow his brand, Easton is taking his BBQ on the road, catering events across the Carolinas. Whether it’s a tailgate, a wedding, or a local gathering, Joel is passionate about sharing his love for BBQ with everyone he meets.
Looking Ahead
With a reputation for delivering exceptional BBQ, Easton Barbecue is poised for even greater things in the future. Joel’s long-term vision includes not only expanding his catering services but also growing the Easton Barbecue brand across the Lowcountry and beyond.
“I’m trying to take it easy right now,” Joel said, balancing his full-time job with the growth of his BBQ business. “But I’m lining up a lot of events, and I’m really excited to see where it goes.”
If you’re in the Hollywood, SC area, make sure to stop by Easton Barbecue and experience the delicious BBQ Joel is cooking up. Whether you’re a lifelong BBQ lover or a newcomer to Carolina’s BBQ scene, there’s something here for everyone.

What Folks Are Saying
Google Review
Among the many Google Reviews, Local Guide “Lois” has sampled widely and had this to say shortly after Easton Barbecue opened:
Everything was absolutely fantastic, we tried a variety; collards, hash and rice, pulled pork, barbecosa(pulled beef), brisket, and ribs. It was all perfectly cooked and flavorful
We tried all 4 sauces they offered and loved the sweet bbq sauce and the gold the best. The absolute top of the list on the must try is the ribs and brisket, some of the best we’ve ever had!
As with any new establishment they need to find their groove, I’d recommend normal dine in seating for ordering and serving and leave the counter ordering process for to-go only, this would help the wait and congestion inside. All of the employees were very friendly and attentive, can’t wait to come back.
Yelp Review
Over on Yelp, Charleston-area native Amber N. happened upon Easton Barbecue during a visit to Edisto:
Amazing BBQ!!! Came from Charleston to be local tourist today to visit Edisto Driftwood Beach – was hungry and stumbled upon this place in search of a local lunch spot. We had our dog and was told she was more than welcome to sit outside on this gorgeous day. Everyone who worked here greeted us and was super friendly and attentive.
We ordered 1/2 lb pulled pork 1/2 lb brisket side of slaw collard greens and hash and rice with two teas. Everything was delicious and fresh. We had a tiny sample of the pork rinds that came out with our meats and knew we needed to purchase a full bag. There is plenty of parking on site dining inside with clean bathrooms and nothing but smiles. No question we will drive 44 minutes for this tasty BBQ again and again.
