Rudy’s Family Restaurant, Harrington, Delaware – John Tanner’s Barbecue Blog

After two truly excellent breakfasts at Wilson’s General Store near Georgetown and Westside Restaurant in Milford, I headed for my final scrapple breakfast of the day at Rudy’s in Harrington. Rudy’s is a newish place at 17064 South Dupont Highway, the main north-south drag in Harrington (Route 13). It’s big.

I used the side entrance and walked past the large party room, where an evangelical service was in progress.

There’s ample dining space in Rudy’s, and on that Saturday morning customers were crowded around a breakfast buffet. I try to avoid buffets, lest I eat too much. So I sat on a stool at the counter and ordered my third scrapple, egg, and cheese sandwich of the morning.

Hmm. Let’s take a closer look at the sandwich

and a shot of the crust.

The server said it was Hughes, but he was not sure which style. (I’m still thinking there’s only one style, Dairy Maid.) That’s a nice thick slice and a creamy center. The crust, as you can see, was good but not great. You noticed the cheese, didn’t you? Excellent cheese and a good hard fried egg. I added Texas Pete and enjoyed the sandwich immensely. You should give Rudy’s a try.

I waddled out to the joyful strains of the singing in the party room, and ended the tour very impressed by Delaware scrapple. It expanded my RAPA-centered experience, and I thank everyone who suggested their favorite places for scrapple. As it happened, I ended up eating a whole lot of Hughes Delaware Maid, and not much else. That’s not exactly a problem, as Delaware Maid is a beauty. It says a lot that the places people recommended most served Hughes. At the same time I was very impressed by how much difference the cooking made, and not just the brand. But that’s true of all foods. I really need to look into other brands, but I also want to dance with the Delaware Maid again and again. I intend to take another tour, although I don’t know when. I would like to try some spots that serve other brands, and I welcome your suggestions. I left Rudy’s headed home, with only one more stop — Bark Barbecue Cafe in Stevensville, Maryland (try it!), and a night on the Western Shore that featured a delicious burger at The Tavern in St. Leonard’s. Stay tuned for details, and go get some Delaware scrapple.
