There are a lot of things on our planet that have the moniker of Seven Serpents. But it’s incredibly easy to nail that down all the way to the bottom when you look at the fact that today’s beer is a Dark Mexican Lager.
This indicates the Seven Serpents in question belong to the hair of Chicomecoatl, the ancient Mexican goddess of Agriculture and Sustenance.
(As a quick aside, I’d like to state that I feel deities are a great place to start when looking at naming beers. It’s wonderful to celebrate them and their historic role in craft beer.)
Back to the beer, this time Seven Serpents (Dark Mexican Lager, 7.7% ABV) from our friends at Leaven Brewing.

I’ve started to really enjoy Mexican lagers, especially Dark Mexican lagers, because they’re coming out with wonderfully rounded and incredibly deep flavor profiles. Much more than the traditionally over-promoted beers you see every Cinco de Mayo.
Seven Serpents has a lot in common with a Schwarzbier than the aforementioned fizzy yellow liquid, but a lot smoother and more well-rounded. It’s actually probably a combination of that and a Dunkelweizen, to be honest.
It has a dark brown color, almost completely black, but not quite. The aroma has some of the fruity aspects of a porter or schwarzbier, but layered on top of a slightly nutty, slightly dark, but still nice and light malt bill.
Light in terms of weight, not color. This is that sort of dark that is not heavy at all, it’s just the same color as a heavier beer without the actual weight of that heavier beer.
The flavor is very smooth and light, and maybe a touch fruity. This is definitely a beer that uses a simple two row malt as a base, and threw in something darker for just a touch of flavor and a lot of color. It was remarkable in having this coffee, roasty, toasty aspect which was very light, but gave it a little bit of added dimension.
The rest of the beer is smooth and buoyant and very easy to drink. It is a wonderful combination of flavors and it took Seven Serpents for me to realize exactly how much I like the style. There’s a lot of great things to be had with it.
And it gets me to investigate more ancient Mexican culture, which I will never say no to.
