Brew Review – South Point Lager by Unseen Creatures

Many moons ago, I saw an article stating that some random number, maybe 2/3, of women purchase bottles of wine based solely on the label.

I always thought this was a crap statistic, partially for its obvious misogyny, and partially for the fact that I think that number is not only higher, but also applies to all consumers.

Unless you are a wine expert and connoisseur, and not everybody is, you’re going to pick the label that looks the best. It’s just inviting. A good label is sometimes more important than the beer itself.

At least when getting started. Obviously a great label can’t save you from a bad beer, but it can at least get some feet in the door before the ship totally sinks.

At least I don’t have to worry about a bad beer behind a gorgeous label with South Point Lager (Lager, 5.2 ABV) from my friends at Unseen Creatures in Miami.

Unseen Creatures has been quite a strong player in the Florida beer scene, and partially because of a very strong and striking visual style. With new ownership comes new direction, and this new direction brings with it a bit of a visual refresh. Not completely, because it still has a good foothold into the previous style, but still branching out a little bit more into uncharted territory for them.

I’m not going to lie, I have had this can for a couple days now and while I have many other beers to consume, this one spoke to me with its fantastic lighthouse label art. It makes sense, the tie-in is with some of their backgrounds in South America, but coming here to the state comprising the country’s most southernly point.

It all sort of works if you let it work that way.

But I will be a monkey’s uncle if I can’t stay how gorgeous that label is. And low and behold, the label did the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen before: it’s main artwork is actually a sticker.

Not that the label is just a sticker on the can, but a small portion of that label, the artwork portion, can be taken off the rest of the label and stuck where you want it to. It’s absolutely brilliant.

I’ve never seen that before, and frankly it’s a trend that I desperately want to have catch on. So many times in my life I have seen beer labels that were just gorgeous, but I simply don’t want the other ‘required by law’ stuff. I just want the basic artwork. It’s so, so brilliant.

Yes, let’s get into the beer and talk about how good that beer is. It is a standard, right down the line lager.

You’ve had it before, and Unseen Creatures has made it absolutely solid. Absolutely crystal clear with a beautiful golden hue, and a slightly fruity, slightly caramely, slightly honeyed aroma.

The flavor is very crisp, lots of malty sweetness with a touch of earthy hops swimming in the background. Obviously this is not a hoppy beer, this is a beach beer, and it is worth every single drop.

It is incredibly delightful, both the presentation and the beer inside. But I mean this when I say that not only am I excited about the path that unseen creatures is taking with its new artwork, but this style of getting a can of beer with a gift on the outside desperately needs to find a bigger home in the craft beer industry.
