Brew Review – The Red by Leaven Brewing

It’s funny, it’s been a very, very long time since I have had anything from The Leaven in Riverview, near Tampa. Interestingly enough, one of the beers that I had at that time was today’s beer. ‘

Since it’s been enough time, I feel like maybe it’s a good opportunity to revisit a beer that I have not gone back to for many, many years.

Dear readers: Leaven Brewing, The Red (Red Ale, 6.7% ABV, 30 IBU).

It has a very bright copper color with a clean and slight caramel nose. The flavor is much more pronounced, with a big caramel and moderate roasted malt flavor that benefits from a pronounced earthy pop bitterness.

It’s funny, in the many years of writing this blog, there’s some beers that tend to never go anywhere. They will always be on tap, either at the breweries themselves or (if I am lucky) in distribution.

No big whatsoever. But for the ones on tap at the breweries, I am far enough removed from most of those beers that I don’t see them for a very long time. When I do, it’s almost like seeing a brand new beer that had never been released before.

The red is one of those beers. I’m happy to have seen The Red because it was great to have another go at such a solidly fun red ale. Yes, I know I need to get to The Red very soon, as they are on my short list of to-do interviews for the Florida Beer Podcast.

Hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later.

Drink Florida Craft,

Dave
