Outer Planet Brewing is celebrating ten orbits around the Sun, but will there be an eleventh?
SEATTLE, FEBRUARY 16, 2025 – This week marks ten years since Outer Planet Brewing on 12th Avenue in Capitol Hill first opened its doors to the public, offering small-batch craft beers to thirsty locals. A full week of anniversary celebrations will feature daily events, culminating on Saturday, February 22nd with a food pop-up and live music.
But for Capitol Hill’s smallest brewery, this year will mark a turning point as the operation looks towards transitioning to new ownership.
Originally under new ownership in 2018, Outer Planet was seeing steady growth, driven by its space-themed taproom in the heart of Capitol Hill featuring both classic and experimental recipes alike. A strong year had Outer Planet looking at expanding its presence in late 2019. But, like many other businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to temporarily shutter their taproom, making business particularly difficult for a brewery primarily reliant on taproom sales. Pivoting to beer-to-go options was a unique challenge for a small scale operation lacking a canning or bottling line nor the space to accommodate such.
Thanks to relief grants and an overwhelmingly supportive local community, Outer Planet navigated its path to recovery throughout 2021, pursuing its pre-pandemic plans to maximize use of the limited space. Upgraded brewing equipment, improved taproom facilities, and new outdoor patio seating propelled the company’s efforts in crafting a welcoming space for the hill’s craft beer enthusiasts.
While Outer Planet’s owners are immensely proud of the brewery’s accomplishments spanning the past seven years, the group realizes it’s time to pass the proverbial torch to a new group of passionate brewers and beer lovers who are ready to captain the ship and continue to produce intriguing beers in Capitol Hill for many years to come.
Meanwhile, Outer Planet’s 10th anniversary celebration will be in full swing this week, with the release of the “10th Orbit” Black Forest Cake Imperial Stout, alongside daily specials and events culminating in a final celebration on Saturday, February 22nd, featuring food by local pop-up ¡That’s-a-Molè! and original live music from friends of Outer Planet.
