Best GF Burger Buns | Pocket Change Gourmet

If you’ve been eating gluten-free for a while, you know very well that not all GF Burger Buns or Breads are created equal. Some are dry and crumbly, some grainy, and some are gummy.

Now that grilling season is upon us, I felt it a good time to share our favorite GF burger buns.

From ciabatta to brioche style GF buns, we’ve tried them all!

We’ve tried (and re-tried!) burger buns from Udi’s, Canyon Bakehouse, Scharr, O’Doughs, Trader Joe’s, GFree, and more and here are the winners.

1st Place: Trader Joe’s Hamburger Buns

These GF buns look like typical wheat burger buns, which makes them a crowd pleaser. They have a soft, tender texture that does not fall apart when eaten.

The buns can withstand grilling, juicy burgers, and don’t get gummy. We stock up on these when we can, but they freeze well, too. They have been the consistent winner in our household.

No, I receive no kickback from TJ’s, but I also have to recommend their English Muffins for use as hamburger buns! They hold up beautifully to even the juiciest burger and are best when toasted or grilled. They have a great yeasty flavor, reminiscent of a brioche bun.

2nd Place: G Free Ciabatta Rolls or Schar Ciabatta Rolls

While these are not technically burger buns, they work great! The Ciabatta rolls have a less starchy composition and stay more tender, rather than falling apart. They are a bit on the dry side, but not nearly as dry as Udi’s hamburger buns. Both brands freeze very well, too. They are great for burgers, pulled pork, sloppy Joe’s, etc.

3rd Place: Canyon Bakehouse Burger Buns

These taste more like a roll than a bun and are far from a brioche style bun, but they hold their shape, stay moist, and don’t fall apart when you eat them. Overall, this brand has awesome breads. They have great texture and elasticity, despite having no gluten.

No Udi’s?

Udi’s has been around for a long time and for many years, was the only brand I could find locally. While Udi’s buns may be more widely available, they are often very dry and fall apart as you eat. Some family members would rather forego a bun than eat an Udi’s.

I’ve found that if I microwave Udi’s buns before using, it improves their elasticity, but this is not always practical when grilling, especially at a BBQ or camping.

I’m hoping they change their recipe because I have some brand loyalty to them- they were with us right from the start:)
