GF Pumpkin Spice Favorites for Fall

While the world has been flooded with pumpkin spiciness for years, it took a while for GF Pumpkin Spice products to hit the shelves.

Now, options abound!

We’ve tried many of them and found a few GF Pumpkin Spice favorites for you. Plus we share some tips to make them even better!

1. Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Bread & Muffin Mix

  • This mix is great- it has a tender flour blend of millet and sorghum that produce a nice light crumb for breads and muffins.
  • However, we find the mix to be overly sweet and the spices to be a touch flat.

The solution?

  • Replace 1/2 cup of the water with sour cream or Greek yogurt.
  • The result is a tender, moist muffin with a tiny touch of tang to offset the sweetness of the mix.
  • Awesome Additions: add 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger and 1/8 teaspoon of cloves to the dry mix to give it a bit more flavor.

Namaste GF Spice Cake Mix

This cake mix can be a little grainy due to the rice flours, but the spice balance is delicious and the texture of the finished bread is lovely, so we recommend it. It makes a great carrot cake, muffins, or bread.

Solution:

  • Allow the batter to sit for at least 30 minutes before baking the cake, muffins, or bread.
  • This helps the starches hydrate which reduces the graininess of the finished product.
  • Awesome additions: Adding 1/2 cup of pumpkin puree to this mix adds flavor, vitamins, and seasonal flair! It does add more moisture, so increase baking time by 2-4 minutes.

King Arthur’s GF Pumpkin Bread Mix

King Arthur’s does a nice job of mixing the flours and starches (oat, rice, potato) to produce a fluffy, tender crumb with balanced spices. They also include molasses, which gives the bread a deep, warm flavor.

Awesome Additions:

  • Allow the batter to rest longer than the recipe suggests, 20-30 minutes, before baking.
  • Fold in 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to this batter.
  • Option to add 1/2 cup raisins or cranberries.

We know there are many others, and we admit we have not tried them all.

But the three brands above are widely available and worth stashing in your pantry for whenever the pumpkin spice craving strikes.
