One thing I do not buy is yogurt in cups. First, I cannot eat dairy yogurt, so I only buy the So Delicious brand, plain or unsweetened vanilla. Unfortunately, this is pricey, so I don’t have yogurt every week, or even every month.
I buy yogurt in tubs rather than the small cups, but it still costs $5.99 for a 24-ounce container. About $1.20 per serving for me plus the cost of any add-ins. I split this into 5 servings, but you could also do 6 servings for about a dollar per serving plus the cost of add-ins. Are the prices of other yogurts so high? It’s been so long since I was able to consume them, I have no idea. But this is not really a low-cost snack in my opinion, and it drives up the cost when making an entire meal. It would be more affordable to only use kiwi or a banana as the fruit. And if you have the option to buy a store or generic brand. I could definitely make this snack more affordably if I didn”t have dietary restrictions.
Someday I would like to learn how to make my own yogurt. I am sure that will save me some money.
I do not want to eat yogurt that a company adds fruit to. I don’t find it particularly appetizing. I think the problem is that I am not sure if it is real fruit, or what else they might be putting into those types of yogurts.
I like to control my add-ins.
This week my yogurt is pretty basic. I did get two tubs. I don’t often shop at Hannaford, but when I do, I will buy more than one tub of yogurt if I can. My Walmart doesn’t sell either of the two I can eat.
Did you know kiwi peels are edible? These peels have fiber and antioxidants that are important for the body and our health.
Yogurt Topped Fruit
Makes: 5 to 6 servings (I made 5)
Ingredients:
1 Kiwi, washed well, ends cut off, peel left on
40 raspberries, washed and dried
1 24-ounce tub of plain or unsweetened vanilla yogurt (I used So Delicious unsweetened vanilla this time.)
5 bowls, with lids if making ahead for the week
- Slice the kiwi into 5 pieces. Chop each section and add the fruit to a bowl so each bowl has about an equal number.
- Place 8 raspberries in the bottom of a bowl.
- Evenly distribute the yogurt to each bowl.
- Cover if you are making ahead, and place in the fridge.
- Enjoy as a breakfast, dessert, snack, or a side.
Notes:
- You can use any fruit combination. I bought the most affordable berries, and kiwi because they are low in price. I have read that berries are good for diabetics.
- Leftover raspberries can be put into a jar in the fridge for snacking or to be used in another recipe, or frozen.
- I put the leftover raspberries in a freezer bag, cut up the kiwi and added that, and put them in the freezer to go with next week’s yogurt.
- You can use any kind of yogurt you like. If what you want has a store or generic brand, it’ll save you money and will taste just fine.
