I was hyped for Jay Rok when he told me he was opening a burger joint. This was back at the inaugural 954 Burger Month event in 2024, and we flash forward to November 2024, when BMC Smash Burgers is now open in Oakland Park, Florida. Of course, I was fashionably late and didn’t make my first visit until March 2025.

First impressions? I loved the exterior—very industrial, just like a smash burger spot should be—the bold BMC logo in the middle seals the deal. There’s a side door entrance, which is where we walked in.
Inside, you’ve got an arcade machine, a couple of tables, counter seating where you can watch the action, and more counter seats along the wall. If you prefer the fresh air, there are a few tables outside.

Parking? There are some spots behind the building, plus parallels across the street. I mention this because, at first glance, it looks like there’s nowhere to park.
Patty Melt Talk
Now, let’s talk about the food. *Did I get the BMC Smash? Nope. I ate a few at the 954 Burger Month event and already knew how great it was.
Instead, I went straight for the Patty Melt: double smash patty, BMC saus, roasted garlic sauce, Swiss cheese, American cheese, and grilled onions on marbled rye. Is it a “by-the-book” patty melt? Not exactly. Is it perfect? Absolutely.

The BMC Smash Burgers are beautiful—perfect crust, melted and crispy grilled onions. And then it happened; I realized that hot dogs were on the menu, and my eyes lit up.

See, I first met Jay Rok when he was doing hot dog pop-ups as Frankenfurters. Back then, I had some killer kimchi-loaded tots and a beer brat when he was set up at J. Wakefield. A year later, he added smash burgers to his repertoire, his true calling, and here we are today.

Beautiful and Tasty Wagyu Chil Dog
When I saw the Wagyu dog on the menu, it was a done deal, and I had to try it. I had them throw some chili on it, a slice of cheese that is placed under the cylindrical meat—which is how I do it at home.
Nacho cheese has its time and place, but this wasn’t it. This chili dog? It’s one of, if not the best, hot dogs I’ve eaten in the last year. Split and griddled, chili right down the middle, cheese on the bottom, all on a Martin’s Potato long roll. Perfect execution.

I also got a side of tots (with all five saus-es) and washed everything down with an Abita Root Beer. I should’ve ordered the fries (crinkle cut!), but hey, next time.
Oh, and let’s talk about the saus—Jay Rok has a handful of house-made ones: BMC, Spicy BMC, Roasted Garlic, Fry Sauce, and Curry Ketchup. Listen, listen, listen… that curry ketchup is phenomenal. We told him he needed to bottle it and sell it. Marcela and I would be first in line.

BMC Smash Burgers is officially open in Oakland Park, and I look forward to whatever Jay Rok does there. He’s got a spicy smash with pepper jack cheese, pickled jalapeños, and the spicy BMC saus—that’s next on my hit list. And, of course, I’m going double. Who’s ordering singles unless it’s by mistake?
