Jo-hanna’s in Lowdham is one of our favorite spots for a village brunch and is a place where more often than not I have ended up scoffing a big old fry up for a late breakfast (read more here)

FULL MONTY
A full English breakfast featuring crispy bacon, baked beans, fried eggs, sausages, sautéed mushrooms, hash browns, blood pudding, and a serving of tomato sauce, presented on a white plate.

They do serve a cracking breakfast here and I feel the need to share this one I have enjoyed in the cafe as I ponder the rest of the post and look back on some of my earlier visits.

Today I was determined to try something different from the menu but to be honest I didn’t stray that far away from my usual choices as I ended up ordering a burger. No spoiler alert there

BURGER ON THE MENU
Menu description for Jo-hanna's Signature Burger, featuring details about the ingredients and price.

I had no real idea what their burgers were going to be like, but I did have high hopes as everything else I have ever eaten here has been pretty good

The menu described the dish as ‘2 beef patties in a toasted brioche bun with salad leaves, tomato, war, caramelised onion chutney & smoked cheese, served with twice fried chips & slaw’

JO-HANNA’S SIGNATURE BURGER
A close-up of a juicy burger with two thick beef patties, topped with melted cheese, caramelized onion chutney, and served on a sesame seed bun. Accompanied by a basket of thick-cut fries.

Now then let’s take a look at this burger! First impressions were mixed, I like that there was two really thick juicy meat patties in the bun, and I was pleased to see that there were two slices of cheese draped over the top of each burger. I would have been happier if the cheese had been melted a lot more so that it formed a molten blanket oozing over the meat.

I did like the flavour of the caramelised onion chutney, which was indeed warm, and the slight sweetness combined with the salty smoked cheese did create a more interesting flavour profile than some burger combinations. Perhaps there was a bit too much of the chutney for some peoples tastes.

The burger meat was well seasoned and had been cooked to give it a decent char. I do prefer smash burgers these days but when I do get a more meaty burger I want one to be cooked like this so that it is still juicy and has a soft comforting bite

BURGER AND CHIPS
A sesame seed burger bun filled with two beef patties, slices of cheese, and caramelized onion chutney, served alongside thick-cut chips in a wire basket.

Now for some comedy, and perhaps a few comments that are more tongue in cheek than serious. I chuckled as I saw the burger arriving on a wooden chopping board, I haven’t seen that for a while and I also found it amusing to see the chips in there own wire basket. I really don’t see why it could not have been served on a plate but maybe that is just me. I always feel bad pouring vinegar, ketchup and mayo on the wooden board and also it often just runs off all over the table

Anyway I digressed into a whole other world there for a moment. We have seen the burger but what about those twice fried chips? Well for one thing they were very hot, probably straight from the fryer and I had to be cautious not to eat them too fast before they cooled. They were very thickly cut, some more like potato wedges than chips, but I liked the inconsistent cuts and the solid bite, just like the burger they certainly felt homemade and that was most pleasing

Overall this was a very decent burger and side of chips for £11.95. It was way more food than I had expected and much more filling than I needed but who needed a light lunch anyway?
