If you’re craving a flavorful salmon burger that’s fresh and zesty, you’ve come to the right place! This Mediterranean salmon burger is packed full of healthy ingredients and comes out looking beautiful. Even your guests that typically prefer a traditional beef burger will be tempted to try one of these salmon patties. That bright pinkish-orange color mixed with chives, sumac, and dijon mustard is a sight to behold. Combine that with tzatziki sauce, sliced red onion, dark red tomatoes, and baby arugula inside of a whole wheat bun, and you’ve got yourself a healthy meal.

Why We Love Salmon Burgers!

If you’re reading this, you’re probably a salmon lover like me. Eating salmon is a great way to maintain a healthy and clean diet. Not only is it rich in antioxidants, but it’s also an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids– which are considered “essential” fats. That’s because our bodies don’t produce omega-3 fatty acids on their own, so we must get them from our diets. Furthermore, salmon is also a fantastic source of protein!

Plus, it’s such a diverse fish — there are so many ways to prepare salmon. You can sautee it, grill it, cook it in white wine sauce, bake it, pair it with salads, etc. The possibilities are endless!

However, salmon tends to be relatively expensive, which is why I love this recipe. By combining the salmon in a food processor with dijon mustard, low-fat mayo, chives, ground coriander, and other ingredients, you can increase the volume so that it yields more patties. You can even add some vegetables and bread crumbs to the patty mixture if you have a couple more guests than you were anticipating.

The Devil Is In The Details When Preparing the Patties

As long as you have a food processor at home, making these salmon patties is a breeze. Just make sure to cut your fillets into small chunks first, and be sure that they are skinless and boneless. You’ll want to start by adding a quarter of your salmon chunks into the food processor with the dijon mustard and mayo so that you have a nice liquidy paste before you add the rest of the salmon and other ingredients. If you’re trying to make your patties even healthier, you can substitute the mayo for egg whites. The mayo or egg whites will act as the binding agent. Without it, your patties will fall apart when you cook them in the pan, and nobody wants a crumbly Mediterranean salmon burger!

You’ll also want to be careful when cooking them. Salmon patties have a tendency to burn on the outside before the inside is cooked. You might want to consider cooking just one patty first so that you can get the temperature right before you cook the rest of them.

In the summer months, I like to serve these Mediterranean salmon burgers with something bright and healthy, like our avocado, tomato, and cucumber salad. If you want some healthy french fries to accompany these burgers, my go-to recipe is our baked sweet potato fries because they’ll help you avoid the deep fryer (and a few hundred excess calories!)
