Vegan Shawarma Burger – Thee Burger Dude

All the amazing flavors of Shawarma, but in a burger! Top it with some Toum and Pickled Onions for over the top FLAVOR!

Shawarma is one of my favorite foods, and I’ve made it a few times on this here blog. I can’t remember if I dreamt this burger up, or saw somebody else make it. Either way, I had to try one myself and I’m glad I did as it’s one of my new favorites!

why you’ll dig vegan Shawarma Burgers

The first time I made these was just recently for a friend’s BBQ over Memorial Day weekend. Everyone gobbled them up! It’s pretty awesome to get Shawarma Flavors in a easy to transport and cook method for exactly that scenario!

So I highly suggest making them for your next BBQ! And they are super simple to put together to, so let’s get to it!

ingredients for a vegan Shawarma Burger

the buns

For the buns, you’re gonna wanna get some squishy white buns. Most commercially available buns in the US are accidentally plant-based, but some are specifically marked vegan.

If you are making 1/4 pound patties, go for the smaller buns at the store, they should be about 3.5 inches. I like to keep the patties thicker for this style of burger, so that’s what I suggest. Otherwise bigger buns just mean bigger patties which is fine too!

Burger Patties

For the patties I just used some Impossible meat, but if you don’t wanna use store-bought plant-based meat, check out my TVP BURGER RECIPE for a homemade burger patty. If you go that route I would maybe leave out the salt when making the Shawarma Seasoning.

Shawarma Seasoning

I’m using my Shawarma Seasoning for this naturally. If you wanna use some pre-made Shawarma Seasoning from the store, by all means, go for it!

Parsley & garlic

Aside from the seasoning, we’ll also be adding some chopped parsley and garlic to the patties. Oh and some Worcestershire sauce too (and yes it’s vegan!) If you can’t find Vegan Worcestershire, just use some Steak Sauce or skip it!

I highly suggest making some TOUM and topping the burger with it. If you love garlic and have never had Toum you are in for a treat, it’s probably the best dip / spread in the world!

Pickles & (pickled) Onions

Aside from the Toum, I also highly suggest adding some Pickled Onions and Dill Pickles too! They cut through all the richness of the burger patty and the toum perfectly!

how to make a vegan Shawarma Burger

To a bowl, add your vegan meat, Shawarma Seasoning, garlic, parsley and Worcestershire sauce. Gently combine with clean hands.

For the patties, I recommend weighing out 4 oz (115g) of the burger mixture. Then form a patty with a cookie cutter that’s the size of your buns.

Or for something faster, use a burger iron or spatula to smash the balls into patties in between 2 pieces of burger paper.

You can toast your buns however you like, but I prefer a dry toast as I find this keeps the buns from getting soggy.

Add your burger patties to the pan. Cook them for about 3 minutes. Then flip them and cook for another 1 – 2 minutes.

You can also grill these outside on the BBQ too of course!

Assemble burger as follows from bottom to top: bun, (optional schmear of Toum), burger patty, liberal schmear of Toum, onions, pickles, top bun!

You can also totally turn these into a (semi) traditional Shawarma. I’ve been doing this with the leftovers! Just cook the patty, then chop it up.

Then simply load up a pita with it and whatever fixin’s you like!

Vegan Shawarma Burger

Thee Burger Dude

All the flavor of Shawarma in a Burger!

Burger Patties

  • In a bowl, combine the vegan meat, Shawarma Seasoning, minced garlic, chopped parsley and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Weigh out 4 oz (115g) portions of the mixture and roll into a ball. You can form them into patties either using some cookie cutters as guides, or you can simply smash them into patties with a spatula or burger press.

  • Let the patties chill in the fridge for 10 – 15 minutes.

  • Get a skillet (or outdoor BBQ) up to medium heat and dry toast the buns until lightly browned. Remove and set aside.

  • Grill the burger patties for about 3 minutes, then give them a flip and cook for an additional 1 – 2 minutes or until cooked to your desired doneness.

  • Spread a light amount of Toum on the bottom bun, then add the patty, followed by a more generous spread of Toum, then top that with some Pickled Onions and Dill Pickles and the top bun and enjoy!
*You can use something like Impossible or Beyond Meat, or you can make some Burger Patties from scratch!
