This recipe was inspired by my White Chocolate Almond Bread Pudding recipe. I was thinking about making French toast for a friend’s get-together, but I wanted to spend some time with them rather than being stuck in the kitchen cooking while they were visiting. I thought, why couldn’t I make French toast like I do bread pudding, and this French Toast Casserole was born!

Ingredients for French Toast Bake
This recipe is pretty simple, and includes things you would normally use in a French Toast recipe with a few extras!
- Brioche Loaf
- Heavy Cream
- Eggs
- Cinnamon
- Orange Zest, and Juice
- Toppings! (I used blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries!)

Instructions for French Toast Soaked Overnight
This overnight French toast casserole is really simple, and you can put it together in about 15 minutes!
- Step 1: Cut up your Bread. You want the bread cut up into about 1-inch cubes, basically you want them to be bite-sized
- Step 2: Mix up your liquids. Mix up your eggs, heavy cream, orange zest, orange juice, and cinnamon. Pour it over the bread! Cover and put in the fridge.
- Step 3: The next morning, take out your French toast, add toppings, and put it in the oven.
- Step 4: Let it cool for 5 minutes, add powdered sugar, whipped cream, or maple syrup, and serve!
Hint: Prep your dish really well! French Toast can be sticky, so make sure your dish is prepped for that.
Substitutions
There are some ingredients that you could substitute for the recipe to make it vegan or vegetarian.
PLEASE NOTE – I haven’t tried these substitutions, so I am not sure how they will work.
- Heavy Cream Alternative – Instead of cream, any milk alternative will work for this recipe.
- Eggs – You may be able to use an egg replacer instead of eggs.
Variations
There are lots of different ways you could change up this recipe! The biggest way to change this recipe is to add different fruits!
- Peaches and Cream – Add peach slices and brown sugar!
- Apple Pie – add apple slices, and apple pie spice!
- Pineapple Upside Down Cake – add brown sugar, pineapple rings, and maraschino cherries!

The Best bread for French Toast is Brioche. Brioche is made with more eggs, and butter so it complements the butter and cream used in French Toast. You can also use Challah bread.
If you want to dry out your bread for french toast, lay them out on a cookie rack in single slices. This lets the air circulate and they can dry out evenly.

Ingredients
- 1 Loaf Brioche Bread
- 5 Eggs
- 1 cup Brown Sugar
- 1 ½ cup Heavy Cream
- 1 Orange Zest, and Juice
- 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
- Optional: Berries for topping
Instructions

Grease a 9×13 Baking Dish

Tear or cut brioche bread into bite size pieces, about 1 inch, place in baking dish.

In a separate bowl, mix 5 eggs, brown sugar, heavy cream, orange zest and juice, and cinnamon. Whisk until well combined.

Pour the egg and cream mixture over the brioche bread.

Add optional fruit toppings.

Cover and store in the fridge overnight.

The next morning, Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees

Remove the cover from the baking dish, and bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes

Remove from the oven, cool and serve.
Notes
- Prepare the night before – Let the casserole sit in the fridge for at least 8 hours so the bread fully absorbs the custard mixture
- Use day-old bread – Slightly stale bread holds up better and won’t get soggy when soaked
- Whisk eggs thoroughly – Beat until completely smooth to prevent streaky, uneven custard throughout
- Let it rest – Allow the casserole to sit for 5-10 minutes after baking before serving for easier slicing
- Test doneness with a knife – Insert in the center; it should come out mostly clean when fully cooked
- Grease the dish well – Butter or spray every corner to prevent sticking and ensure easy serving
