Motorhome Holiday Travel Restrictions In 2025

What Motorhome Owners Need to Know About Travel Changes in 2025

Whether you’re heading off for a few weeks of touring or planning a quick European getaway, it’s worth knowing that 2025 has brought in some important rule changes for motorhome travellers.

New restrictions across Europe (and even further afield) mean that a little extra planning could make all the difference to your trip.

From where you can park overnight to who can drive what, here’s a practical round-up of what’s changed and how it could affect your time on the road.

Greece Joins the Crackdown on Wild Camping

Greece has introduced one of the toughest sets of motorhome restrictions in Europe to date.

Motorhomes are now banned from parking overnight in public places, including beaches, forests, parks, and even most car parks.

Private landowners are also restricted from hosting more than one motorhome unless they hold the correct licence.

The penalties? Up to €300 in fines and, for repeat offences, the risk of up to three months in jail.

The Greek government says the move is aimed at protecting public spaces and managing tourism more sustainably. But for motorhome owners, and the small communities that often benefit from visiting campers, it’s a significant change.

Similar Rules in Other Countries

Greece isn’t alone. Many popular destinations have tightened up their approach to wild camping:

  • Netherlands & Luxembourg: Strict bans on overnight stays outside designated campsites.
  • Switzerland: Free-standing is rarely allowed unless clearly signed otherwise.
  • Czech Republic: While not officially banned, wild camping is strongly discouraged—and often policed.
  • UK: Areas like North Yorkshire and Lancashire are trialling overnight parking bans in popular coastal spots.

The message across the board is the same: spontaneous stopovers are no longer a safe bet. Planning ahead, and sticking to authorised sites, is more important than ever.

Driving Licence Update: A Win for Larger Motorhomes

There is some good news. A recent change to EU driving licence rules means that holders of a standard Category B licence will soon be allowed to drive motorhomes weighing up to 4.25 tonnes (instead of the previous 3.5t limit), as long as they complete additional training.

This is a real plus for owners of larger, modern motorhomes, who previously needed a separate C1 licence.

Other Things to Keep in Mind This Year

As always, regulations vary by country, but there are some key points to watch out for in 2025:

  1. Blind Spot Stickers are required for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
  2. Entry & Exit System (EES): If you’re a non-EU traveller (including from the UK), you’ll need to register before crossing into the Schengen Zone. Expect delays during rollout.
  3. Mandatory Safety Gear: Depending on where you’re travelling, reflective jackets, warning triangles, first aid kits and headlamp deflectors may be required.
  4. UK Sticker: GB stickers are no longer accepted—make sure your motorhome displays a UK sticker instead.
  5. Green Card: You may still need one if travelling outside the EU—check ahead.
  6. Speed Limiters: Heavier motorhomes (over 3.5t) may need a limiter fitted in some countries.

With rules changing fast and enforcement on the rise, it’s essential to check your insurance is in place and has you fully covered.
