The year was 1975: Bill Gates and Paul Allen had just founded a little business called Microsoft; the Americans and Soviets launched a joint space mission in the form of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project; and Ace Jewelers opened its doors in Amsterdam. To celebrate this momentous 50th anniversary, Ace Jewelers and NOMOS Glashütte have partnered to create two distinctive new orange-hued versions of the Metro neomatik and Metro neomatik 39, each limited to 50 pieces.
It’s hard to say what NOMOS is best known for — minimalist Bauhaus design, its suite of beautifully decorated in-house calibers, or its unexpected, but always remarkable, use of color. Indeed, there are few brands who can compete with NOMOS when it comes to finding new and surprising ways to mix the color palette. Given that the new Metro neomatiks were part of a collaboration with Ace Jewelers, there was no question that orange would feature prominently. To create these watches, Ace Jewelers and NOMOS turned to the multiple-award-winning designer of the Metro, Mark Braun.
When designing the Metro, Braun’s vision was a modern, minimalist aesthetic that drew on classic design cues — like the domed sapphire crystal and wire lugs — to create a distinctive, yet timeless design. In curating the colors for this collaboration, Braun opted for inverted color scheme for the two models, with carefully selected shades of orange. Purchased alone or together, the colors of the two models work seamlessly.
Alon Ben Joseph, CEO of Ace Jewelers, describes the collaboration with NOMOS to create these new anniversary pieces, “Celebrating our 50th anniversary with a NOMOS limited edition feels like a full-circle moment. The Metro embodies contemporary elegance and precision, and having Mark Braun personally involved in the design process makes these pieces even more special. These editions push the boundaries of the Metro collection with their bold aesthetics, creating a striking duo that tells a cohesive story.”
Mark Braun adds: “It has been a welcome and inspiring challenge to design the Anniversary Limited Edition for Ace Jewelers of our Metro for NOMOS Glashütte – especially as I´ve been living in the Netherlands for some time. Happy birthday Ace Jewelers – enjoy the time ticking and celebrate Metro in its orange vitality in every detail.”
Getting to the details of the watches themselves, the Metro neomatik’s stainless-steel case measures 35mm in diameter, 42.1mm lug-to-lug, and has a slim case height of just 8.1mm. The Metro neomatik 39 is similarly compact in its dimensions, measuring 38.5mm in diameter, 45.5mm lug-to-lug, and 8.4mm in height. The 35mm Metro neomatik features a dark orange dial with light orange sub-seconds register, while the color scheme is reversed on the Metro neomatik 39. Each watch comes mounted on a black Horween genuine shell cordovan strap with quick-release spring bars.
Both of the anniversary models feature NOMOS’s superb DUW 3001 automatic caliber. Ultra-thin at just 3.2mm in height, the DUW 3001 features an efficiency rate of 94.2%, which far exceeds industry norms. The DUW 3001 utilizes NOMOS’s proprietary swing system and provides up to 43 hours of power reserve. Each movement is adjusted in six positions to ensure accurate timekeeping. Luckily, the Metro is equipped with a sapphire caseback to show off all the traditional Glashüte elements, including the three-quarter plate construction, tempered blue screws, and rhodium-plated surfaces with Glashütte ribbing and NOMOS perlage.
