If there are two words that sum up Sarah Morgan’s latest book, A Secret Escape, they are friendship and family.
Milly and Nicole had been friends since childhood and even when Nicole became a hugely successful film star, they still had that strong bond until Milly’s marriage broke up and Nicole inexplicably just wasn’t there for her. Despite this, when Milly gets a call for help from Nicole, she takes her in immediately and helps her hide from the media. I enjoyed reading about the story from both women’s points of view which gave a real insight into the kind of people they were and helped me really understand them.
Milly’s daughter Zoe also had ambitions to become an actress, inspired by her Aunt Nicole. However, she too is experiencing difficulties with a close friendship inflamed by some rivalry over a getting a part in a school play. Sarah Morgan wrote so well about her teenage feelings and I’m sure many readers will remember just how all consuming and insurmountable problems can feel at that age.
One thing I always enjoy about Sarah Morgan’s books is that they are often multi-generational and that’s certainly true here. As well as Milly and Zoe, the book features chapters from the point of view of Milly’s mum Connie and we also meet Milly’s grandmother Peggy. Peggy in particular was a hoot! The author is so good about writing about the experiences of woman at all stages of their lives making the books appealing and relatable to a wide range of ages.
A Secret Escape is a lovely book which shows the importance of friendship and that new opportunities can present themselves at any time of life. With its focus on family and friendship, forgiveness and love it’s ideal for summer reading.
My thanks to the publishers HQ for sending me a copy of the book for review. A Secret Escape is out now and available in paperback, digital and audiobook versions.

A lifelong friendship
Childhood friends Milly and Nicole had always been more like sisters so Milly never understood why Nicole dropped out of contact all those months ago. Milly buried that hurt and moved on with her life.
A call for help
Now, suddenly, Nicole is begging for Milly’s help. She needs somewhere private to hide, and the only safe place she can think of is Milly’s holiday home business in the Lake District. Milly knows she should tell Nicole no, but she can’t ignore the desperation in her old friend’s voice so, despite her misgivings, she agrees to let Nicole stay.
A summer to reconnect
Over a summer of tentative conversations, the two women begin to reconnect, and there’s a potential new romance for Milly too. But then the biggest bombshell of all lands and their delicate friendship is put to the test once more …
Can the friends come together in this time of need, or will this summer break their bond forever?
