Beat the Bugs Before They Beat You

The summer season makes for a party every day with pool days and backyard BBQs to attend and nature trails to trek. That is, until the bugs show up, ruining the fun.

It’s hard to have a pest-free summer, especially in Alabama’s humid climate. Summer pest control treatments ensure your indoor and outdoor spaces stay pest-proofed this sunny season. However, even with effective pest control in place, you can learn more about the specific pests you’re fighting and do your part in ensuring you keep them gone and away for a long time.

Continue reading to learn about the most common summer pests—and how to beat them to the party!

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes ruin everything! Whether enjoying coffee on the porch early in the morning or watching the sunset after dinner, you can bet your bottom dollar that mosquitoes are out and ready to bite. Did you know mosquitoes’ itch-causing bites can also carry dangerous diseases like malaria, dengue, and yellow fever?

You must be proactive in saying “bye-bye” to mosquitoes for good. Protect yourself by wearing mosquito repellent. You can use common brands from the supermarket or an organic variant, such as lavender, thyme, or citronella oils.

For longer-lasting, effective results, we offer regular mosquito management to prevent them from taking over your outdoor spaces. If you make your reservations early, we offer a year of mosquito services at a discounted price!

Flies

Flies flock to all things sticky, icky, and gross—but also to all things delicious, like what you’re having for dinner—basically everything! Flies always seem to be the guests you never invited.

To discourage the presence of flies around your home, throw away or put up anything they may be attracted to. From dog poop to last night’s dinner leftovers, clean up around your home—both inside and out. Additionally, you can hang a sticky piece of paper (called flypaper) in areas where you usually see flies in your home. These are often eco-friendly, non-toxic, and reduce the use of chemical insecticides.

Although it doesn’t work on all types of flies, the sweet and sour trap is another common method of fighting off the little pests. It involves filling a small cup with apple cider vinegar and adding one drop of dish soap. This trap is highly effective for many fly varieties, especially fruit flies.

Ticks

Ticks are sneaky; they hide in overgrown shrubs, uncut grass, and even under your pet’s fur. With the tick population rising due to warmer winter temperatures and the growing population of deer and rodents, ticks aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Ticks also carry the pathogens of many illnesses, like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and the more common disease, Lyme. Wearing tick-repellent spray or clothing is critical when hiking or camping outside in tick-infested areas. Tucking your pants into your socks and wearing long sleeves will also help protect you.

We offer yard pest control services to ensure ticks stay out of your yard and out of your way this summer!

Hornets and Wasps

Unlike ticks, hornets, and wasps can fly in addition to their dangerous qualities.

You have probably seen hornet and wasp nests hidden under your porch, decks, or in random woodpiles around your yard. If you disturb them, even by accident, these flying insects will surely get agitated and want to sting you.

There are many over-the-counter sprays that you can use on their nests when they are away. Unfortunately, there is still a high risk of being stung: The best and safest way to eliminate hornets and wasps is to call a summer pest control expert, like Vulcan Termite & Pest Control
