Terpenes do not get you high.
They are merely a flavor and aroma chemical found in certain plants such as cannabis (good ol’-fashioned weed!).
As for their usage and regulation, I can’t say I’m too terribly familiar with that.
I will say that the team at Stormhouse Brewing is a lot more familiar with it, and as they used them to help bring about their rather humorously and appropriately 4-20 beer, Snoop Juice (Hazy IPA, 7.5% ABV, 40 IBU).
Guess the inspiration.
I love Stormhouse since they give detail to each of the beers, and one of the details they mentioned is that this particular beer was made with Pineapple Express cannabis terpenes.
I know that Pineapple Express is a strain of marijuana, and I know it’s also a fairly popular movie based in and around this particular recreational plant, but I can’t say that I’ve experienced either one.
I have experienced the beer, and it is rather interesting in nature, because it took a turn I did not expect. There’s a wonderful color to it, just shy of corn yellow, and completely opaque.
The aroma comes in with a slight vegetative quality and a strong amount of citrus. Understand, this is going to happen a lot, as this beer was liberally laced with not only those terpenes, but also Sabro, Citra, Azacca, Simcoe, and Mosaic hops. There’s a lot coming in here.
But the big turn came when I tasted it, and perhaps it was all my fault, because I did not expect the pineapple. It is very strongly pineapple. But it’s not like a candy pineapple or an ice cream pineapple, this sits more as a vegetable sort of pineapple. A perfectly ripe and freshly cut pineapple.
It’s almost a shame that people will be turned off and turn away because of the cannabis connection, because it’s got a great flavor and wonderful summery feel. But here I am, faced with a fantastic beer I would readily enjoy having on a regular occasion.
I will definitely will look forward to this coming around again next 4-20.
