University Institute of Legal Studies is one of the best Institute of Legal Studies in Punjab and North India, with a unique balance of tradition and modernity. Our mission is to furnish the students with the skills to understand and diagnose the complexities of various legal and other inter-disciplinary issues and contrive solutions to these problems through analysis and reasoning.

Students of the University Institute of Legal Studies are trained in the spirit of the fundamental laws, procedures of procedural laws, techniques of client counselling and skills in legal and social sciences research.

About the Competition

The Case Analysis Competition is an academic event designed to strengthen students’ understanding of Criminal Law through the critical analysis of judicial judgments.

Participants will be provided with selected criminal law judgments/cases and will be required to examine the facts, legal issues, applicable statutory provisions, arguments of the parties, judicial reasoning, and the final decision of the court.

The competition encourages participants to go beyond merely summarizing a judgment and critically evaluate the legal principles, interpretation of criminal law provisions, precedents relied upon, and reasoning adopted by the judiciary. Participants may also be expected to present their own observations regarding the significance and impact of the judgment.

Objectives

1. To develop students’ critical thinking and analytical skills through systematic examination of judicial decisions and legal issues.
2. To enhance understanding of legal principles, statutory provisions, judicial reasoning, and precedents involved in decided cases.
3. To improve students’ ability to identify material facts, legal issues, arguments, ratio decidendi, and implications of judgments.
4. To strengthen legal research, interpretation, communication, and presentation skills through structured case analysis.
5. To encourage students to connect theoretical legal knowledge with practical judicial decision-making and contemporary legal developments.

Proposed Outcomes

1. Students developed the ability to critically analyse judgments rather than merely reproduce case facts.
2. Participants improved their understanding of judicial reasoning, application of legal principles, and interpretation of statutes and precedents.
3. Students demonstrated improved legal research, problem-solving, argumentation, and presentation skills.
4. The competition enhanced participants’ ability to evaluate different perspectives and formulate reasoned legal opinions supported by appropriate authorities.
5. Students gained greater confidence in applying classroom knowledge to practical legal situations, contributing to improved advocacy and professional legal skills.

Eligibility

The competition is open to all students currently enrolled in an undergraduate law program, either the 3-year LL.B. or the 5-year integrated LL.B. and LL.M. course, at any recognized institution within India.
