We’re heading into the holiday season – a time for family and friends to be traveling, visiting and staying over. How is your guest bedroom situation?
I don’t have a dedicated guest bedroom, so anyone who comes to stay ends up on an air mattress in my home office. The other choice is the living room, but it doesn’t have a door and the only bathroom is off the living room – so it lacks privacy. At least my office has a door and therefor some privacy. I do have a dedicated set of linens and pillows for the room – anything to make the air mattress seem more luxe! But, planning his stay has got me dreaming of having a dedicated guest bedroom – I’d so love that!
One of my inspirations for a great guest bedroom are usually those found in boutique hotels. They usually have a great combination of beautiful, comfortable and welcoming. A little bit upscale, a little bit homey. The good ones strike just the right balance. Here are some that I really love:

Blue Inn, Newburyport, MA
Blue Inn in Newburyport is another place on my “must-stay” list. The rooms come in varying sizes and amenities, but all look amazing.
I think what all these hotel guest bedroom s have in common is that they are relatively simple and could easily be created at home. Amenities include reading lights, lovely bedding and pretty details.
Here are 10 quick tips for creating a special guest room that would shine in a blog post:
- Plush Bedding
Invest in high-quality, soft sheets and a variety of pillows to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. A cozy throw blanket adds an extra touch of warmth. - Bedside Necessities
Include a bedside table with a reading lamp, phone charger, water carafe, and a few books or magazines for easy access. - Fresh Flowers
A small vase of fresh flowers or a potted plant adds life and freshness to the room, creating an inviting atmosphere. - Luxurious Towels and Toiletries
Provide fluffy towels, extra toiletries (like shampoo, conditioner, and lotion), and maybe a bathrobe to make guests feel pampered. - Wi-Fi and Entertainment
Leave a card with the Wi-Fi password on the nightstand, and consider providing a TV, Bluetooth speaker, or a selection of books for entertainment. - Personalized Touches
Add a personal touch like a handwritten welcome note, or tailor the room’s decor to reflect your guest’s interests or preferences. - Ample Storage
Make sure there’s space for guests to unpack their belongings, whether it’s an empty drawer, closet space, or a luggage rack. - Room Darkening Shades
Install blackout curtains or shades to give guests the option of a darker room for better sleep, especially in the morning.
