August 4 – FIFPRO’s Secretary General Alex Phillips has departed the organisation, the world players’ union said on Monday.
In a brief statement, FIFPRO wrote that Phillips “played an important role in implementing the reforms approved by FIFPRO’s member unions following the organisation’s governance review.
“Working closely with the Board, member unions and staff, he helped strengthen FIFPRO’s structures, executive management and operational framework during an important period of organisational development.”
FIFPRO President Sergio Marchi added: “Alex has made a valuable contribution to FIFPRO during an important period in our organisation’s development. His work in driving the implementation of the reforms approved by our member unions has strengthened the organisation and positioned FIFPRO well for the future.”
Two years ago, Phillips arrived at FIFPRO after having administered the World Remission Fund at FIFA. That year, FIFPRO Europe and the European Leagues filed a formal legal complaint against FIFA with the European commission accusing FIFA of abusing its dominant market position and breaching EU law.
FIFPRO and FIFA were at loggerheads and FIFA boss Gianni Infantino repeatedly asked the union to drop the complaint. On the eve of the World Cup, FIFPRO Europe signed a memorandum of understanding with the global governing body over the transfer system and player welfare standards that withdrew all legal proceedings against FIFA.
