Foundation Outdoors I Trail Cooking

I came across Foundation Outdoors a while back, but finally decided to order a couple of meals to review.

The meals are single-serving, and while they have decent protein, be very, very wary – they have incredibly high sodium per meal for many of the meals. I would predict that, if asked about that, the reply is that they are “high performance outdoor meals” and that sodium is “needed”. But not at 3,000+ mg per bag. That is crazy high. For me, I am so used to a lower-salt diet (I cook from scratch and add just a bit of sea salt to our meals) that when I encounter truly salty food, I struggle to take more than 1 to 2 bites to taste-test. Otherwise, I am literally salted out after. So, going into the review, if you like to salt your food without tasting, or you think Mountain House is lightly salted, this might be your kind of meal. If not, there is your warning. One is at 1,400 or so, and a couple is just above 2,000.

It calls for 8-10 ounces of water; I use 10 and let it sit for 15 minutes.

The texture is good. It’s a creamy chicken pot pie, a stoup really. It is satisfying. Good flavor.

But. It is a literal salt lick. I only ate 2 bites due to the high sodium. If you like salt and you like comfort food, you might like this meal.

Lime Chicken with Avocado Mango Salsa

$13.95 on Amazon with free shipping.

800 calories, 57 grams fat, 25 grams protein, 12 grams fiber, 2,630 mg sodium.

Ingredients:

Lime Chicken (Chicken Breast, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Lime Juice, Cilantro, Salt, Garlic Powder, Black Pepper), Avocado, Mango, Tomato Salsa (Tomato, Mango, Avocado, Onion, Cilantro, Lime Juice, Salt, Garlic Powder) Cilantro Lime Rice (Long Grain Enriched Rice (iron, niacin, thiamin, folic acid), Lime Juice, Cilantro, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Salt).

It calls for 8-10 ounces of water; I use 10 and let it sit for 15 minutes.

It smelled good, but the texture was off for me. It is hard to explain that – it was a weird coating of the rice with sauce. That was hard for me to get past. The flavor was fine though, just also very salty.
