Handmade Ceramic Tiles Transform a Guadalajara Hotel Facade

Thousands of handmade ceramic tiles come together like pieces of a puzzle across the facade of the Torre San Luis hotel in Guadalajara, Mexico. Created through a collaboration between artist Alex Proba and the artisans of Cerámica Suro, the large-scale installation transforms the exterior wall into an abstract interpretation of a lush garden ecosystem.

Titled Shape of Movement, the public artwork combines Proba’s distinctive organic forms with a palette inspired by the local landscape. Earthy neutrals are complemented by dusty pinks and soft blues, echoing the sun-washed colours of the surrounding environment. Arranged across the facade, the sculptural shapes appear to shift and interact, creating a sense of continuous movement.

“The work is about the movement we carry through spaces every day,” Proba explains. “I wanted the mural to feel as if the shapes are interacting with one another and flowing through the architecture itself.”

The installation marks the second collaboration between Proba and Cerámica Suro. Their first project was a vibrant ceramic installation created around a swimming pool at a private residence in Miami.

With its handcrafted tiles, organic forms and muted yet expressive palette, Shape of Movement brings together art, architecture and traditional ceramic craftsmanship in a site-specific work that responds directly to its surroundings.
