The below information is again shared by my
friend Usha. who is an emerging life coach.
I personally felt this topic is very much
important and needed in the present world. It’s always better to get tips/advice
from a relevant professional, who is generally non-judgmental.
It’s a fact that only if we live with that
person in person we will know who the real he (or) she is. Then why this Pre-marital
counselling if you ask, it will give you a better picture of whether this
person is ok to live with in person (or) not. And help guide us in many more
things about a married life.
Importance of Pre-marital counselling:
1. As
the name indicates, it’s before one gets married. Men and women have different physical and
emotional needs. They are generally
happy and a bit curious to explore the institution called marriage.
2. Marriage is an important event in life. It’s a
lifelong commitment. However, it has many aspects which many people are not
aware of unless they experience it.
3. Pre-marital counselling helps in this area.
This type of therapy prepares the couples in selecting a suitable partner and
preparing them mentally for marriage.
4. It helps them in building good communication
lines between the partners.
5. It helps them understand the significance of
marriage. Building good relationships
with the partner and all the family members involved.
6. It helps partners build realistic goals in a
marriage. Also helps them with the know-how
of dealing in a conflict, when it arises, wherein they need to look into each
other’s needs and act accordingly.
7. It also
helps them look into decision-making skills when needed by making suitable and
sustainable adjustments.
8. Maintaining respect for each other, their
views and building boundaries, etc are looked upon as well.
9. Separate sessions and joint sessions are
generally conducted to understand individual points of view. Equal opportunity is provided to each
partner to express themselves fully about themselves, their beliefs, fears,
expectations, etc.
10. A pre-marriage counsellor helps with any
existing issues, if any and also identify any potential issues that could arise
later and ways to resolve them.
11. Since we are all a product of our past
experiences, pre-marital counselling, most importantly, helps to understand
each other as a couple and what to expect out of a marriage and create a
marriage that lasts.
