It’s been a while since I last posted a blog, lots of challenges came our way, demanding my time and pulling me away from writing. But now we’re back, different but still the same. Older, I’m not sure about wiser but definitely more experienced and certainly used to the fighting for the boys rights. I’ll go into all that in future blogs but today I wanted to share some of my Half Term so far…
SO, yesterday, first day of the school break, full of energy and not yet broken of spirit I decided to bake some rock buns with Squiddy. I have to say I did quite well, it occupied him for ten minutes – most of which time he spent pinching marshmallows and stuffing them in his mouth!
Yes I know rock buns don’t have marshmallows in them there was a packet in my ‘baking box’ so he grabbed them. A couple did make it into the mixture though but I drew a line at his other demand which was to add mayonnaise! There was a little foot stamp at that one!
We filled the kitchen with the glorious smell of baking, it smelt like it used to when you walked round the bakery bit at Morrisons! Filled with yesterday’s success, this morning I asked Pix if he wanted to make anything – a cheesecake.
‘Erm, okay and what do we need for that?’
He’s done cooking at school and I think in Year 7 he might even have brought one home so I wasn’t expecting this…
‘right so you get some breadcrumbs…’
‘Whaaat?
‘No, biscuits’ (that’s better) ‘and you make them into powder… and then you make then mushy’
‘Ok, so how do you do that?’
‘You add some water’ (my confidence was waning) You make it go cold (he had no instruction for this) ‘And once it’s frozen you put the custard on…’ (right..)
‘So where’s the cheese bit then?’ (At this I got a look like I was insane for questioning his methods) ‘obviously that’s in the custard’
‘Any particular kind of cheese’ (in my head I was willing him to say cream but knew it wouldn’t be)
‘Cheddar’ (yep!) ‘…and when the custards cooled you add the whipped cream’
There you have it, my fifteen-year-olds take on a cheesecake. I think Mary Berry’s job is safe don’t you!
I did say ‘I’m not sure you have custard in a cheesecake’ and his response, which I think is the best part, was to say ‘Well, I’m sorry I don’t have an Instructions menu’ (that’ll be a recipe then!)
So if you’re on Half term now, enjoy it and if you need any ‘Instruction Menus’ to occupy your little ones, I’ll ask Pix to post some!!
