[Review] The Greatest Superpower by Alex Sanchez – Descendant of Poseidon Reads

Hi, everyone!

First, I just want to thank Multicultural Children’s Book Day and the sponsors, especially Capstone for sharing and gifting this book to me and to some other reviewers around the world, as for their annual celebration to raise awareness to kid’s literature that tackles diversity and access to reading one.

So, I’ve been matched with this book, The Greatest Superpower by Alex Sanchez that tells about the story of a boy adapting to the transitions that will happen to him, especially to his idolized Dad and what surrounds changes he will come upon to.

Without further ado, here’s my thought about it below. Check out the book details down below, too.

SYNOPSIS: It’s the summer before high school, and thirteen-year-old Jorge Fuerte wants nothing more than to spend his days hanging out with his fellow comic-book-obsessed friends. But then everything changes. His parents announce they’re divorcing for a reason Jorge and his twin brother, Cesar, never saw coming—their larger-than-life dad comes out as transgender. Jorge struggles to understand the father he’s always admired, but Cesar refuses to have anything to do with him. As Jorge tries to find a way to stay true to the father he loves, a new girl moves into the neighborhood: cool, confident, quirky Zoey. She tames Jorge’s unruly terrier and enlists the terrier and Jorge in a dance routine for the back-to-school talent show. As the date of the show draws near, Jorge must face his fears and choose between being loyal to his brother or truthful about his family’s secret. Although he’s no superhero, Jorge already has the world’s greatest superpower—if he decides to use it.

It was my first time reading a book, this book, that I sometimes see with the opposite setup. Suppose, it would be the son/daughter coming out of their shells to their parents and not the other side. But what happens, if it would be the case, that your mom or dad comes out for you? Would you accept her, your Dad, or, him, your Mom? What would be the reactions of yours? Would you embrace their transitions firsthand or gradually as time passed?

That’s how Jorge faces through the book. With what is given to him in the very first part of the story. Honestly, me on his situation, I think, I would be shocked and don’t think straight, too, but I know when you really love or care about your parents (or even anyone) whomever they become you’ll accept them, not soonest but eventually time will come. Apart from that, there’s this between his parents, too. Also, the impressions others would get once their secret with his brother comes out.

The Greatest Superpower, as what this book is titled, is really what everyone has already had, and Jorge decides to use it which makes everything alright even he still hopes for that moment in the end. Yet he comes to accept these things to be different already. This book is great and I hope you find time to enjoy reading it, too.

Alex Sanchez has published eight novels, including the American Library Association “Best Book for Young Adults” Rainbow Boys and Lambda Award-winning So Hard to Say.

His novel Bait won the Tomas Rivera Mexican-American Book Award and the Florida Book Award Gold Medal for Young Adult fiction.  Alex’s latest book, You Brought Me the Ocean, a graphic novel from DC Comics, came out in June, 2020. He has a master’s degree in guidance and counseling and worked for many years as a youth and family counselor.
