I used to admire certain people’s homes that gave me an immediate sense of calm and comfort when I walked into them. And, I wondered how they were able to put off such good energy or give such a good feeling. Was it just the people’s unique energies or their personal style? Whatever it was, I wished I could bottle it up and take it home with me.
Then I discovered things like feng shui that change the energy and feeling of a home, and I thought “that’s it, I need to learn about feng shui home design”. I had already by that point been learning about how everything is energy and energy can be changed, and I knew I wanted to bring in more positive energy. So, this was perfect!
And, if you hang around I’m going to share the things I learned with you so you can make your home feel like those homes that relaxed me so much before. Calm and peaceful, cozy and comfortable, where even the air feels different for some reason. Spa like or sanctuary vibes and very zen and healing.
So, let’s get started with these feng shui home tips!
But first, I want to tell you that as I was working on my outer space I was also working on my inner space, or my inner self. I found that they kind of go together, because you don’t want to have cleared out all the clutter in your mind and still have it around you in your home affecting you, and the other way around. If you’re working on both too, my Inner Voice Workbook is full of healing prompts and is downloadable so available right away!

First, What Feng Shui Home Design Is and Isn’t
At its heart, Feng Shui home design isn’t about expensive decor or strict rules. So relax. You don’t have to go out and buy a bunch of extravagant stuff just to get that wonderful feeling that Feng Shui gives. In fact, I personally found that it’s more about the little things and that less stuff is more calming and peaceful than having a lot of stuff.
So it’s less about buying or using fancy things in your home and more about interior design that’s arranged in a way that allows energy, or Chi as it’s called, to flow like water rather than getting stuck in corners. Flow like water – I love the sound of that. And, that describes the feeling of those homes that used to relax me.
I actually used to always have a fish tank of some kind when I was younger (thinking about doing it again!). I remember one time, I was like in my early twenties, and my parents came in town to visit and stayed the night. My dad (drunk at the time, which I don’t recommend but it’s still a great story lol) was laying on my pull out couch bed, totally relaxed, saying something like “awe, that sound is so relaxing”.
It was the sound of the water in the fish tank. Something I never gave that much attention to, but it made me realize that that’s probably why I loved having a fish tank so much – they are very relaxing! And, I think water really is. It’s cleansing and calming. I know that’s getting off the subject a bit, but you know it does show that sometimes it’s the little things that can make a home feel sanctuary like or relaxing to be in.
But, back to the topic, haha.
Feng Shui is actually an ancient practice, and I like that. I think we don’t give near enough thought or credit to our ancestors and what they knew in their wisdom back then, what was passed down to them. Sometimes it’s easier for us to think with our heads or analytic minds instead of our hearts, souls, and what feels right.

15 Feng Shui Interior Design Tips
Here are the top fifteen things I learned about feng shui interior design for a holistic, calm and peaceful, high energy home:
- Clear the clutter: Every great interior design starts with decluttering. Removing unnecessary items allows positive energy to flow freely. A clutter-free space promotes clarity of mind. (I personally found the tips in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up so helpful for this.)
- The power position: Place your bed in the “command position.” In a proper feng shui home layout, you should see the bedroom door without being directly in line with it. This fosters security and better sleep.
- Balance the five elements: Incorporate wood, fire, earth, metal, and water into your interior design. A balanced mix enhances the energy flow of the entire house.
- Maximize natural light: Open your curtains to let light fill your zen house. Light is a powerful source of positive energy and instantly uplifts your spirits.
- Bring nature indoors: Use plants to symbolize growth and vitality. (I like this 3 pack of Air Purifying Plants for this.)
- Maintain the flow: A well-maintained home is essential for feng shui home design. Fix leaks or repairs promptly to prevent stagnant energy from settling in your layout.
- Choose soothing colors: Opt for calming greens and neutrals in your feng shui home. These promote relaxation and a truly tranquil atmosphere.
- Strategic mirror placement: Use mirrors to reflect good energy, but avoid positioning them directly facing the bed or the front door in your home layout.
- Create a welcoming entrance: Your front door is the “mouth of chi.” Keep your entrance well-lit and clutter-free to invite abundance into your interior design.
- Mindful artwork: Choose art that resonates with positive energy. Place it thoughtfully to enhance the flow of energy in your space.
- Scent and air quality: Keep your zen house air fresh. Use natural scents like lavender or citrus to promote a positive atmosphere.
- Soften sharp corners: Arrange your furniture layout to avoid “poison arrows” (sharp corners pointing at seating or beds). Soften angles for a more harmonious feel.
- Tech-free sanctuary: In your bedroom layout, limit electronics. This creates a restful environment and promotes better sleep quality.
- Personalize your vibe: Infuse your personality into your interior design. (A customized 3D crystal photo is a unique way to do this!)
- Practice gratitude: A zen house isn’t just about furniture; it’s about heart. Expressing thanks for your space invites more positive energy into your life.
Creating a Holistic Space That Nurtures the Soul
To me, Feng Shui is truly a holistic practice that’s very healing. It helps you invite balance into your life and space. With it, we go from thinking “okay, where do i put this couch” to “let’s get a couch in a calming color that will look and feel relaxing”. Or, just throw a cozy neutral colored blanket over the back of what you have to get the same effect.
We go from trying to decorate with pretty things to thinking of things like creating a cozy corner space that’s comforting and healing to sit in. The point? How does it make you feel.
Here are some of the ways creating a holistic space, like a Feng Shui one, helps and why it’s worth focusing on:
- Mind-body connection: Feng Shui emphasizes the connection between your surroundings and your mental and physical well-being. When your home is in harmony, it positively impacts your mindset and supports overall health.
- Stress reduction: A balanced and clutter-freeenvironment reduces stress. The calming colors, natural elements, and well-thought-out arrangements help to create a serene atmosphere for unwinding after a busy day.
- Enhanced productivity: Good Feng Shui can boost your productivity by creating a space that inspires and motivates. When your surroundings are organized and uplifting, you’re more likely to approach tasks with focus and efficiency.
- Improved relationships: The energy flow in your home affects interpersonal relationships. By creating a harmonious and inviting space, you encourage positive interactions and communication with family, friends, and even yourself.
- Increased abundance: Feng Shui is closely tied to the concept of attracting prosperity. By aligning your space withthe principles of abundance, you open yourself up to opportunities and enhance the flow of positive energy in the areas of wealth and success.
- Emotional well-being: Your home is a reflection of your inner self. When you prioritize Feng Shui, you invest in your emotional well-being. A space that nurtures positive emotions contributes to a more fulfilling andbalanced life.
- Better sleep quality: The bedroom, in particular, plays a crucial role in Feng Shui. By creating a peaceful and restful environment, you improve the quality of your sleep. A good night’s sleep is foundational to overall well-being andlife balance. (One way to sleep better is with an air purifier that provides cleaner, fresher air.)
- Holistic approach: Feng Shui is a holistic practice that considers the interconnectedness of different parts of life. It helps you take a comprehensive approach to balance and address physical, mental, and emotional aspects simultaneously.
