2025 Picture Book Award Winners & More
Hello everyone. I’m back from a blog hiatus and excited for a big update to the book list soon. Dr. Sandra McGuire and I have been on the hunt for newer Age Positive picture books. Watch for a post with many additions in the next few weeks. (Meanwhile see the “Picture Books” tab on this website.)
Mark your calendars for AGEISM AWARENESS DAY on October 9, 2025. The American Society on Aging (ASA) has ideas, a fact sheet, social media kit and resources. I’m grateful to see this website “A is for Aging, B is for Books” listed. It’s so important to encourage positive aging attitudes in children and “nip ageism in the bud.” My local public library was very receptive to my 2023 Ageism Awareness Day effort.
There’s a big push to move schools away from using age stereotypes to celebrate the 100th Day of School. Previously on this blog I’ve shared an easy idea involving picture books. Perhaps reach out to a school near you? The ASA has a 100 Days of School alternative curriculum. Not feeling ambitious this fall? Follow along on social media & share to educate others. Let’s show kids that having many, many birthdays is a good thing!

Did you know that the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) gives an annual award celebrating a picture book that shows aging in a real, positive and human way? GSA’s goal is to help kids see growing older as something to value. (After all, childhood is a very short stage of life.) Learn more.
It’s exciting to see that publishers & authors have added this accolade to age positivity in information about their books. Dr. Sandra McGuire, my advisor for this website, has been instrumental in developing the “Krout & Elmore Award.” Sandra has maintained a list of Age Positive picture books for decades.

You must check out the well deserving winner of the 2025 Krout & Elmore Award and the list of finalists. Please share them with a child. No kids in your life? Ask your library to purchase them. Pop a few in a Little Free Library. Perhaps print and share the flyer in libraries, schools, doctor’s offices? (Internalizing positive aging attitudes enhances health and longevity.) Eighteen Flowers: a gift of chai

This past year I’ve continued to write and revise an array of picture book manuscripts. One will be a non-fiction book in a year or so—after an illustrator works their magic. Another actually addresses ageism for kids in a fictional format—please cross your fingers for a publishing contract.
Some fun personal news to end—recently the sweetest new granddaughter joined her brother in my family and my heart. <3 This is truly a happy stage of life.
Many thanks for reading today! Lindsey
