Next Week I will be in Port Aransas teaching a Pleinair workshop, so I am getting out all my notes on “How to do a Painting in One Hour”. First, have no fear, you will not die if it’s a mess, and Second, we can fix it! Third, break the subject down into simple shapes, and fourth, put paint on the canvas. I know this sounds obvious, but I have seen so many beginning artists freak out when facing a blank canvas. So, get some paint on the canvas as soon as possible and “BE BOLD”! The painting above was from the villa we rented on a cliff in Positano, Italy. We were looking down at the house below and the blue Mediterranean. The Painting only has three main shapes. The boxes of the roof, the trees, and the blue water. I started with the boxes, but as soon as I could, I put in the shapes of the trees. It’s always best to start with the dark shapes and keep it simple. Details and lights go on top later. After the first block in, I loaded my brush with blue paint and went around the tree shapes. changing from deep blue to turquoise. After you have the three shapes filled in with color, you can start messing with the edges of the trees, and lo and behold, you have a painting! It’s just like pieces of a puzzle!
