SPY×FAMILY Chapter 116 Manga Review
Spy x Family Ch. 116
スパイファミリー
Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:
Matthew drives an open top “Range Rover” to the game preserve which is near the demilitarized zone is. Matthew’s falcon annoys Hemlock by pecking him. This leads to Yor and Matthew talking about domestic life. However, Hemlock is irritated by Yor’s “marital bliss”, especially the talk about kissing one’s spouse.
When they reach the elk habitat, the three fly through the trees of the forest. Matthew gives a final warning about the dangerous fauna and creatures in the area. He gives permission to kill the poachers, save the leaders. Hemlock challenges Yor to see who can kill the most. She declines. Yor finds an antler, but learns that it is not from the elk. Hemlock finds shoe prints, so they return to the trees until they find an elk.
The poachers show up to take the beast down. As such, Yor, Matthew, and Hemlock take down the poachers. Matthew saves one to Hemlock’s chagrin. However, Matthew wants to tack him to the poacher camp. Unfortunately, the elk goes nuts and Yor cannot calm it down. Matthew asks Hemlock and Yor to try to calm the elk down anyway while he goes to find the camp.
Yor continues to try to calm the elk, but then gets nicked in the shoulder by one fo Hemlock’s kunai. Hemlock finds Yor to be an impediment to the mission. Thus he’s determined to eliminate her.
Thoughts/Review:
We have a nutter arrive with SPY×FAMILY Chapter 116. Hemlock had already shown his disdain for Yor. It seems he dislikes the fact that Yor got married. Thus in his mind, she’s lost her edge. The fact that Matthew is also married doesn’t seem to enter the equation in his warped mind. So now he’s attacking Yor since he sees her as a hindrance.
I suppose Garden only has a limited number of assassins. Everyone who survives has extraordinary skills, as seen by Matthew leaping through the trees with the same finesse as Yor or Hemlock. All things considered, I would say that Yor and Matthew are the most “normal” folks we’ve seen. Matthew is an old (not elderly) man who’s level headed and has managerial skills. Yor is very naive, but she works hard and cares about others. This is despite the fact that both have slaughtered countless numbers of people.
On the other hand, Hemlock is clearly unstable. Some of this is for comedy purposes (the falcon pecking him). However, in terms of the world they live in, he’s clearly just as skilled in combat as Yor and Matthew. It seems to me that someone as unstable as Hemlock would be a liability to Garden. However, what he brings to the table must outweigh the liability. Well, at least until this chapter. Now he turns on Yor, who’s been nothing but kind and polite to him.
As to what happens next, no clue. Assuming they fight, Yor’s going to win due to her main character status. That said, considering how Hemlock kept droning on about Yor’s domestic situation, I suppose this will continue to be a sore spot for Hemlock.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
Let me wrap up my review of SPY×FAMILY Chapter 116 with some final thoughts.
- The next chapter is a short mission, focusing on Matthew. I’m going to save that for when I do the volume review.
- It was a nice touch for Endo-sensei to put in that weird, giant plant that Damian’s bunch “discovered” in chapter 104. Little bits of continuity like that are a nice touch.
- Yor learning that Matthew and his wife had “welcome home kisses” when they were younger made me chuckle. Not that I expect Yor and Loid to start snogging.
In the end, SPY×FAMILY Chapter 116 was a good chapter, even if the Hemlock character is a complete nutter.
