Every woman reaches a moment in life when she wonders what it would look like to step toward God instead of away from Him. Do you know what I mean? Sometimes it happens in a quiet season. Sometimes in a chaotic one. And sometimes it shows up in the form of a simple question that lingers in the back of your mind. Hey, you begin wondering how to come to Jesus in a way that feels real and honest. I’ve noticed this question rising in conversations, emails, and even in my own heart during different seasons.

It usually grows from a desire for peace and a longing to feel anchored again.

The second takeaway is that the journey is far more relational than it is religious. And the third is that God does not shame us for wanting to come home. He welcomes it.

When I revisited the Prodigal Son story today in my own Bible study time, I saw this truth all over again.

The moment the son began thinking about returning home, something shifted.

He didn’t fully understand what he was doing. No, not at first.

Yet the desire was enough to begin the journey.

Anyway, that moment is familiar to many women – and men too for that matter.

You feel tired of carrying life alone.

You sense that your heart wants something truer.

Yet it’s also a moment filled with possibility.

Remember? He even rehearsed it.

He tried to convince himself he didn’t deserve anything good.

Yet the father interrupted him with compassion.

At first, I was like “Dang, the father didn’t even say anything back!”

But actually, it did something more important and more precious than any words.

He put the wheels in motion for full restoration.

He turned to his slaves and said “Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put the ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.” (See Luke 15:22)

The story shows the heart of God.

Your Heavenly Father who loves you so much.

He moves toward us faster than we move toward Him.

Us Daughters Can Make it Harder

Reading the story again reminded me how often we women assume that coming to Jesus requires perfection.

I think it’s a gender thing.

We think we have to do more or be more.

Yet the opposite is true.

The son had no gifts to offer.

No promises to make.

No spiritual résumé.

He came home exactly as he was.

And God invites us to do the same.

When you’re wondering how to come to Jesus, remember this picture of grace.

It counters every fear of not being enough. It softens every attempt to earn God’s approval.

It quiets the silly pressure so many women feel to be polished before they approach God.

What Coming to Jesus Looks Like Today

Many people think faith is about memorizing rules.

I used to.

Well, if I’m honest, I still struggle with that legalism.

But modern research in faith formation, including work from the Barna Group, shows something very different.

People move toward Jesus through relationship, support, safety, and honest conversations.

They grow through personal reflection and connection, not through pressure. This is good news if you are still learning how to come to Jesus in a way that feels natural.

Coming to Jesus today looks like taking small, steady steps. It might start with exploring Scripture on your own.

It might be asking your first honest prayer about the things weighing on you. It may be simply admitting that you want to know God more.

The Prodigal Son teaches us that movement toward God is enough to begin the transformation.

You don’t need a dramatic moment.

You need sincerity.

I remember when I re-dedicated my life to the Lord about 30 years ago after I strayed away from His ways.

A man was the catalyst of the straying – but it wasn’t it fault.

I should not have been dating a man not walking with the Lord – even if he was fine as wine. *yeah, I said it*

Anyway, my little boy was about two years old – barely walking.

A sermon in the old church building was beign preached by Dr. George Westlake. It really hit me. It moved me. I got up, took my babies hand and we both went to the alter.

I’d come to myself.

I’d come to my senses.

Walking Your First Steps Toward Faith

As you think about how to come to Jesus, imagine yourself taking one small step.

Maybe your first step is reading Scripture with curiosity.

You might begin with John 3:16 or Romans 10:9.

These verses explain God’s love and what it means to believe.

They are simple yet powerful.

That is my prayer, anyway.

In my own life, whenever I sensed this desire growing, I had to let go of the idea that I needed to be perfect.

I’m still learning that Jesus doesn’t require perfection. He asks for trust.

Say a simple prayer.

Or talk to a trusted Christian friend.

These small steps become a pathway toward a deeper relationship with God.

And as you walk it, remember the father running toward the son. That’s the heart of Jesus running toward you.
