Powerful Scriptures For When Someone Hurts You

I’ve found scriptures for when someone hurts you. Some wounds don’t leave bruises that anyone can see.

Instead, they leave sleepless nights, unanswered questions, and a heart that struggles to trust again.

Perhaps your spouse withdrew emotionally after years of marriage. Maybe an adult child said something you never imagined hearing. A lifelong friend disappeared when you needed them most. A family member betrayed your trust. Or maybe someone at church—where you expected grace and compassion—became the source of your deepest hurt.

If that’s where you are today, you’re not alone.

The Bible never minimizes emotional pain. Throughout Scripture we meet people who experienced betrayal, rejection, abandonment, disappointment, and grief.

Yet woven through every page is the same reassuring truth:

God is able to heal what people have broken.

When my mother was ill, there were several family members who could have come around, but did not. That hurt me so much. I struggled to care for her.

I stopped my life. I gave my last penny, but many of them were absent. None came to visit her. None called her.

But, when she passed, they wanted to sit up front and center. That hurt me deeply.

When she needed care and my money ran low, some even wanted to stop the sale of her home because they deemed it heir property.

Property none of them helped pay taxes on, helped with upkeep or rarely even visited.

My heart was broken.

I had to turn to forgive, but I could only do that after turning to God’s Word for comfort, reproof, and healing. Thank God each came.

You must know that healing doesn’t mean pretending the hurt never happened.

It doesn’t always mean the relationship will be restored.

Instead, biblical healing means allowing God to restore your heart so someone else’s actions no longer define your peace, identity, or future.

Whether you’ve been wounded by a husband or wife, a child, a parent, a close friend, a church member, or someone you trusted completely, God sees your pain.

He is not asking you to ignore it or simply “move on.”

That’s what fake people do.

No, He invites you to bring your broken heart to Him, where true healing begins.

*heavy sigh*

Let’s talk about what God’s Word says about finding hope, healing, and restoration when someone hurts you deeply.

Healing Truth: God Draws Near When Your Heart Is Broken

When someone hurts you deeply, it’s easy to wonder where God is.

You may pray through tears, asking why He allowed someone you loved to wound you so profoundly. David reminds us that God doesn’t move away from brokenhearted people—He moves closer.

Perhaps your husband has become emotionally distant after years of marriage. Or worse, maybe he was unfaithful.

Maybe your best friend stopped returning your calls, or your adult child has rejected your advice and created painful distance in your relationship.

Those experiences can leave you feeling abandoned.

But God’s presence doesn’t depend on another person’s faithfulness. He’s always with you.

While people sometimes leave, disappoint, or betray us, the Lord promises to stay close to those whose hearts have been crushed.

That doesn’t mean the pain disappears overnight.

It means you never have to carry it alone.

Even when you feel forgotten by everyone else, God is present, comforting, strengthening, and gently putting the broken pieces of your heart back together.

God’s Promise: Your heartbreak is never too great for God’s presence. He comes near to those who feel shattered, not after they’ve healed, but while they’re still hurting.

Isaiah 41:10

Healing Truth: You Don’t Have to Face Heartbreak Alone

Deep emotional wounds often leave us afraid of what comes next.

Will I ever trust again? Will I always feel this lonely? Can I survive if this relationship never changes?

God answered those fears long before we ever asked them.

Imagine a woman whose husband asked for a separation after decades together. God is with you – even in this.

Remember, He doesn’t promise that life will never hurt. Actually, he promises the opposite.

Nevertheless, He promises that He will strengthen you through the hurt. When your own strength is gone, His strength becomes enough.

God is faithful not only when life is easy but also when your world feels like it’s falling apart.

I’ve noticed it is easier to say He is faithful when life is simple.

But, faithfulness is His nature.

His hand is strong enough to hold you steady until healing comes.

God’s Promise: God doesn’t simply tell you not to fear—He tells you why. He is with you, He strengthens you, He helps you, and He holds you securely.

Psalm 147:3 – My second of scriptures for when someone hurts you

Healing Truth: God Heals Wounds That No One Else Can See

Some injuries require stitches.

Others require time. Lots of it.

Emotional wounds often require both time and God’s healing touch.

I’ve noticed the deepest hurts usually aren’t visible.

They’re the painful memories that surface unexpectedly, the tears that come while driving home from work, the anxiety before family gatherings, or the loneliness that settles in after everyone else has gone home.

Can you relate to any of these?

Perhaps someone spoke words you’ll never forget.

Those wounds can’t be covered with a bandage or some fake smile. Even so, they can be covered.

They can be covered by the blood of Jesus. They are are not beyond God’s ability to heal.

Notice that Scripture says God binds up our wounds.

Binding is a process.

Think about it: a doctor carefully wraps an injury to protect it while healing takes place.

I think in much the same way, God often heals our hearts gradually.

As we spend time in His presence, immerse ourselves in His Word, and trust Him day by day – it happens.

He begins replacing despair with hope and bitterness with peace.

God’s Promise: God doesn’t ignore emotional pain. He lovingly restores wounded hearts one day at a time until healing begins to replace heartbreak.

Well, I’m Done for Now

Above, I’ve given you the scriptures. The ones I think help when you are hurt deeply by someone.

Just as I’ve guided you in pondering the ones above, you ponder each one for yourself.

Here is how to do it:

  • Think of examples of hurts or even the hurt you are dealing with right now.
  • Think abut what God can do and promises to do in the Bible verse.
  • Then read the verse. Think about it. Meditate on it.
  • Journal – if you’re one to write in a journal. I’ll list some prompts below for you.

Journal Prompts for When Someone Hurts Your

When someone wounds your heart, it’s tempting to over analyze.

I know it is for me.

During those times, I turn to my journal. I write.

That way I won’t replay the conversation, search for answers, or imagine how things could have been different.

Instead of allowing your thoughts to spiral, maybe you can use these journaling prompts to bring your pain before God.

When I journal, I find I am able to see and hear comforts I couldn’t any other way.

Healing begins not by pretending we aren’t hurting, but by honestly inviting Him into our brokenness.

1. Tell God Exactly What You’re Feeling

Scripture: “Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (WEB)

Don’t worry about sounding spiritual or having all the answers. Girl, just write.

God already knows what happened and how deeply it affected you.

Journal Prompt:

Write about what happened without minimizing your pain. How did this person’s words or actions affect your heart? What emotions keep surfacing—sadness, anger, disappointment, loneliness, or confusion? End your entry by asking God to draw near and remind you of His presence.

2. Replace the Lies with God’s Truth

Scripture: “See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God!” — 1 John 3:1 (WEB)

When we’re deeply hurt, we often begin believing things that simply aren’t true.

Oh, this very moment, I am hurt. I’m fighting thoughts of inadequacy and why did that happen?

Someone else’s rejection can make us question our worth, even though our identity has never depended on another person’s approval.

Journal Prompt:

Write down every negative thought you’ve been believing because of this hurt. Then, beside each one, write a truth from Scripture about who God says you are. Ask yourself which voice you want to believe moving forward—the voice of your pain or the voice of your Heavenly Father.

3. Give God What You Cannot Carry

Scripture: “Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 (WEB)

Some burdens were never meant to be carried alone. You cannot change another person’s heart, but you can place your own heart in God’s hands.

Journal Prompt:

Make two lists. In the first column, write everything you cannot control about the situation. In the second column, write what you can do with God’s help. Spend a few minutes praying over the first list, intentionally releasing each concern to the Lord.

4. Remember God’s Faithfulness

Scripture: “The LORD’s loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22–23 (WEB)

Pain has a way of narrowing our focus until all we can see is what we’ve lost. Gratitude doesn’t erase suffering, but it reminds us that God is still working even in difficult seasons.

Journal Prompt:

Write about three ways you’ve experienced God’s faithfulness during this painful season. They don’t have to be dramatic. Perhaps He provided a friend who listened, a verse that encouraged you, strength to face another day, or peace that surprised you. Thank Him for each one.

5. Picture the Healing God Wants for You

Scripture: “He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3 (WEB)

Healing doesn’t always mean the relationship will be restored. Sometimes God’s greatest work is restoring your heart so that someone else’s actions no longer control your joy, peace, or identity.

Journal Prompt:

Imagine yourself one year from now, walking in the healing God desires for you. What has changed inside your heart? What fears have been replaced by trust? What pain has been replaced by peace? Write a prayer asking God to continue His healing work, one day at a time.

A Prayer Before You Close Your Journal

Father, You know every wound I carry and every tear I’ve cried. Thank You for seeing the pain that others may never understand. Help me trust that You are working, even when I cannot yet see the healing. Give me the courage to release my hurt into Your hands and remind me each day that my worth is found in You alone. Restore my heart, strengthen my faith, and fill me with the hope that only You can give. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Well, that’s all I have – that is true in more ways than one.

I am in healing mode, and it has nothing to do with losing my family. I’ve been hurt. Wounded and battered, God will guide me to wholeness again.

His Word will be the catalyst. His Spirit will be the Comforter. I pray these scriptures for when someone hurts you are comforting for the duration of my healing process.

He will do the same for you.

You stay hopeful too, my friend.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
