Brew Review – Buzzin’ Bee by Veterans United

There’s a very interesting subset of art that the military has used on the side of ships and planes and whatnot that I find absolutely fascinating.

It definitely reached a zenith during World War II with some amazing designs, quite a bit of which featured either scantily clad women or Donald Duck. Hopefully not both.

If you take a look at the can for Buzzin Bee (Wheat Ale, 6.3% ABV, 21 IBU) by Jacksonville’s Veterans United, you’ll get an idea.

This particular artwork, with a sailor’s hat-wearing bumblebee ready to go with mash paddle in hand, pays homage to the US Navy Seabees, construction battalions well known for doing what is needed when it’s needed.

And oddly enough, that’s exactly what this beer feels like, the right beer at the right time with a lot of amazing aspects to it. The color is moderately caramel, just a touch above orange, but not quite to a brown.

The aroma is caramel, but lightly so. The mouthfeel is a little bit effervescent, which is an interesting place to put the stronger honey flavors featured in the beer. As the beer warms up a little bit, the rye spice tends to become more prominent.

While it’s not excessive or overpowering, it’s a little bit more of a kick into some interesting things with those dark sweet honey flavors, malt and wheat, with a touch of rye and orange peel. And that orange peel connects with the honey in a way that amplifies both to high heaven.

There’s an undeniable aspect of the cultural impact that WWII tends to have when it comes to the visual history and appreciation of the US military. Search it out, it’s worth a few minutes to enjoy this very particular genre of art, and it’s best paired with the brewing artistry that comes out of our friends in Jacksonville.
