WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR BUSINESS GOALS NO LONGER FEEL RIGHT
1. Don’t panic
If your business goals no longer feel right, the first thing you need to do is not panic. Especially if you are a goal-driven business owner, it can be worrying to wake up one day, look at your goals and think ‘these don’t feel right anymore’. But it happens frequently in business. The sad reality is many business owners aren’t paying enough attention to their goals and their feelings as a business owner to recognise when a goal no longer feels right. The fact that you have identified a goal no longer feels right shows that you are checking in with your goals and how you are feeling as a business owner – and that’s a great thing.
2. Question whether the goal is out of alignment or you are uncomfortable
There are definitely some people who will tell you that if a goal doesn’t feel right to just stop working towards it straight away. However, before you do that, you should delve a bit deeper. The reality is that, especially when growing your business, you are likely to have business goals that are stretching you. They might be pushing you to do things you’ve never done before. They might mean being more visible. They might mean having bigger responsibilities. This is likely to make you feel uncomfortable, but being uncomfortable isn’t a bad thing. There is a difference between stretching yourself and feeling discomfort around achieving a goal and a goal being misaligned.
3. Identify why the goal no longer feels right
If you decide that there is definitely a misalignment with your business goal, rather than you just being uncomfortable, then it’s time to work out what is causing the misalignment. Things are constantly changing in business, both because of what is happening externally in the world and what is happening internally. Identifying why the goal no longer feels right will help reassure you that no longer working towards the goal is the right thing to do and also help you to set a new aligned goal.
Some possible changes include:
- Your bigger business vision has changed
- Your lifestyle desires have changed
- You want to work in a different way (have different offers)
- You want to work with different clients
- A new opportunity has come your way

4. Get clear on your goals going forward
So you’ve got a goal that doesn’t feel right and you’ve worked out why it doesn’t feel right. Now the question is “Do I just stop working towards that goal or do I need to have a new goal?”. As the Annual Planning Queen, I specliase in helping business owners to set annual goals and then create an annual plan. In most cases, a business owner will set 3-5 annual goals. So it could be that they remove the misaligned goal(s) and just work towards to the others. However, in some cases, it makes sense to set a new goal. This is why it is was important to identify why your goal no longer felt right. Knowing why the goal was wrong can make it easy to see what type of goal you need to have instead,
Whether you decide to set a new goal or just remove the goal, it’s important to then review the rest of your goals and ensure you are happy with the rest and that they are all working together. Ultimately, you want to have a revised set of goals, with a clear deadline, that you are working towards.
5. Review and revise your plan
I’m going to assume that you didn’t just have a business goal, but you had a plan for achieving your business goal. This means you can’t just remove the goal or replace the goal with a new goal without revising your plan. A plan is a living document and it’s normal to make changes. The removal of a goal can free up resources (people, time, energy, money etc) to go towards other goals. This could be the new goal if you create a new goal or it could be used to work towards the other goals. Ultimately you want to have a plan to follow that you are confident will enable you to achieve your goals.
