It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? originated as a meme that started by Shelia at Book Journeys, then it passed onto Kathryn at The Book Date. Then the Unleashing Readers, Jen Vincent, Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee decided to give it a twist by having a #kidlit focus. So this is a time to share what you have been, currently are, and will be reading soon!
If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, early readers, chapter books, middle grade, young adult, or anything in those genres – then join us! This is also a great opportunity to see what others are reading and you might find your next “must-read” too!
If you join in the fun and you Tweet, tag your tweet with #imwayr!
Happy last day of the month!
I’ve been swamped with work, errands, and other things this past week. I’m going to wait another week to share my February wrap up for you all. I will most likely have it up on Instagram this week though–follow me @books.icedlattes.blessed. There was very little reading time for me this week and it makes me sad, but I am excited for a brand new month tomorrow! I hope you are too.
I look forward to hearing from you and seeing what you’ve been reading!

- Singing with Elephants by Margarita Engle
- A beautiful novel-in-verse from Engle about Oriol, a Cuban girl who aspires to belong in a world where it seems like she can’t. She just moves to Santa Barbara, California where she helps her parents take care for many injured animals at their vet clinic. Her love of working with animals grows so strong that she wants to be able to share her love just like animals can talk so easily with one another. Soon, she meets Gabriela Mistral, whom she learns is the first Latin American winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Gabriela is a poet who can write words so beautifully and eloquently like a song. Unexpectedly, Gabriela takes Oriol under her arms and helps her with her writing. Poetry is the focus as it is so lyrical. While Oriol is learning big news is happening at the clinic… it has to do with Oriol’s favorite animal, an elephant. This is a gorgeous novel-in-verse full of heart, friendship, courage, and action. It felt very reminiscent of The One and Only Ivan, so readers who thoroughly enjoyed that book should definitely read this one come May.
- Hello, Crabby! by Jonathan Fenske
- An adorable Acorn series for young readers! I laughed numerous times at Crabby’s crabbiness. I loved the easy-to-read text with the bits of humor sprinkled all throughout, the ease of following this graphic novel primer format, and how there were a few “chapters” to help build stamina, confidence, and intrigue for these young readers. I’ll have to check out the others in the series!
