Craft Beer Austin | Frontyard and the Austin Greek Festival Release Collab Beer

Central Texas is no stranger to beer-centric cultural celebrations, from relative newcomer events like the ATX Filipino Day Market to decades-old Oktoberfest events every fall. The latest addition to this rich local tradition is a unique collaboration between Spicewood’s Frontyard Brewing and the Austin Greek Festival.

Hellas Lager is a play on the ancient Greek name for Greece and the ultra-drinkable German lager style. Frontyard Head Brewer Jonathan Harris took inspiration from Mythos, Fix, and other pale lagers that are ubiquitous to Greece. “I looked at the ingredients those breweries use and how they describe their beer then tied it together with my impressions of the beers. With a basic premise of the malt and hop bill I wanted to use I built a recipe to create a drinkable beer with a medium ABV, subtle hop character (using the classic European lager hop Saaz), pleasant maltiness and slight sweetness.”

The Austin Greek Festival features food, dancing, a vendor market, and live music.

The beer will be exclusive to the Austin Greek Festival, which takes place May 22-24 on the grounds of Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Westlake. The festival celebrates Greek culture and heritage with iconic foods like gyros, chicken souvlaki, and desserts like baklava. Entertainment includes traditional dancing and live music from a band flown in from Greece. The event also features a vendor market, church tours, and a children’s play area. The festival is open from 11am-10pm on Friday, May 22nd, and Saturday, May 23th, and 12pm-10pm on Sunday, May 24th, rain or shine. Admission is $5.
