Premise

Mona Kawai is super popular with everyone that meets her, except for the new transfer student. Frustrated, she tries everything she can think of to get him to like her.

Euri’s verdict: No

I realise the point is that everyone is stunned by Mona’s beauty, but having the first thing post-opening sequence being a grown-ass salaryman blushing and smiling as a school kid walks past him is, well, you know.

The show’s premise isn’t a particularly radical spin on your typical school-centric romance anime; there have been many other shows where one of the lead characters is super popular and trying to get the attention of the other. Mona is trying everything to get Medaka to acknowledge her beauty – like everyone else does – and Medaka acts stoic and tells her to go away because he’s not allowed to talk to girls.

Sounds like a run of the mill romcom, but then Mona decides to use her body to make Medaka fall for her. She lifts her shirt and flashes her panties at Medaka during this episode, in an attempt to get a reaction out of him.

Mona is a second year student, so about 16? Nah, no thanks.

To be honest though, even if you were to remove those scenes, there’s still nothing of substance to enjoy here. Medaka is, by requirement of the show’s premise, a bland character when around Mona. There’s no interesting chemistry on display, so I just can’t see how you would come to care about their relationship if this back and forth between Mona being embarrassed/Medaka acting unaffected continues for the entire series. Hard pass.
