Just a few years back, there was a ‘so called’ study on alternative cancer therapy published on cancer . gov. The study claimed that alternatives in general lead to lower 5 year survival.
The real issue with this study is that they did not dig into any specific therapies but only examined the overall realm of alternatives used. We all know that the wrong therapy can be harmful. This is just plain common sense. Additionally, this is an easy way out on discrediting alternative therapies, hiding successes behind the skirt of failures.
As an example, my wife was given 2 weeks doing nothing, to possibly 4 weeks with radiation to live in the end. At that point, she told her doctor that she was going to pursue natural and alternative therapy. The doctor became red faced and angry at the mention. To cut this short, the other doctors jaws dropped when they saw her walking down the hospital halls for a follow-up 3 months later.
A week later, her pain medication was changed to something that she was allergic to and was written on the front of her folder ( can not take, allergic ). Sadly, this was not caught by the pharmacist, her nurse, or anyone else. A couple days later, she started going into organ failure.
Intentional or medical error? we will likely never know.
The point here is that certain cancer alternatives can be very beneficial and some things are unknowns.
The American Cancer Society disses natural and alternatives, calling them “unproven” but I have not seen where the ACS has ever funded even one single natural or alternative therapy study. Same is true for most cancer groups. The pink ribbons and similar money raisers mostly give to their own support, well paid management, and promotion. They often give only about 10 percent and that goes to pharmaceutical research.
