Titled The Declaration in Crisis: Origins of the Civil War, our conversation will go beyond celebrating the Declaration as a landmark document and instead dig into how differing interpretations of it led to debate, discord, unrest and eventually, civil war.

Myers of University of Wisconsin, Dennis Boman of American Intercontinental University, Matthew Norman of University of Cincinnati, and Diana Schaub of Loyola University will be joining us!
TAH’s online seminars bring social studies educators together each month on select Saturdays from 10:45 AM–12 PM ET for focused and content-rich discussions. Registrants receive a curated reading packet with primary source excerpts, access to a pre-seminar discussion board, and on-demand seminar recordings with additional source materials. For professional development, participants earn documented acknowledgement of their digital engagement.
The Civil War was the nation’s greatest test of the principles announced in the Declaration of Independence. This webinar series explores how Americans on all sides appealed to the Declaration’s ideals while confronting the moral and political crisis of slavery and disunion. By engaging with the documents and ideas that shaped this pivotal era, teachers will deepen their understanding of the Civil War while gaining fresh perspectives on the Declaration’s enduring role in American history and the classroom.
