A while back, I had picked up three meals from a newer company, Iron Goat Provisions. They are based outside of Seattle, WA, and offer Asian meals for the outdoors.
When I first shopped with them, early in summer, they were only offering vegan-friendly meals. They have added ones with meat now (and I will review them as well in the future).
Often I am disappointed in vegan meals, because they are far too heavy on the nooch (nutritional yeast) and taste straight out of The Hippy Hut™. These did not.
That right there bumped up their positivity rating. Yes, the meals use soy protein, but it is like when you go to an Asian restaurant that uses fake meat. It isn’t like TVP. Huge difference. A quality thing.
The prices vary between $14.99 and $15.99. That puts it in the middle of the price range for backpacking meals.
They fill you up, as the meals are single-serving and offer around 600-670 calories, with 19 to 22 grams of protein.

Of the three meals, this came in last. It was still good, but compared to the rest, I simply liked the other two more.
It had great flavor and was the spiciest of the three. No blandness here. I liked the two proteins, and the tofu was great.

As you can see, the soy protein is in large pieces.

The tofu rehydrates perfectly. I gave all the meals my standard 15-minute sit time, as they had rice as the carb base.

The Japanese Curry, though? My absolute favorite of the three.

Nice-sized pieces.

If you make Japanese curries using the flavor bricks, you will absolutely devour this meal. I rarely eat more than a couple bites when I am reviewing. I ate the bag. Entirely. It isn’t spicy, but it is flavorful.

The Korean Bulgogi. When our youngest saw it, he was suddenly interested in helping me. He loves pretty much all Korean food. This one was safe for his food allergies. Loved the flavor – the sweet and savory hit it well. I got one bite; he wandered off with it.

As with the other meals, lots of protein.

This meal, the soy protein held up well. Alistaire ate the whole meal and asked if we could order the new meat version to try. If a 14-year-old likes it, it gets high marks.
My Thoughts:
If you are bored with most outdoor meals because the flavors are boring, you should check them out. The meals were very delicious and unique to the market.
