Netflix made its return to AnimeNYC with a packed audience at the Main Stage for some news and sneak previews coming from their anime library. Hosted by media personality Juju Green, the night was filled with excitement from the crowd as some announcements has gotten everyone hyped for what’s coming in the streaming platform’s original anime lineup.
First up, fans were given a surprise when Academy Award nominee Brian Tyree Henry appeared on stage to introduce Netflix’s newest anime series Bass X Machina. Made by Studio Mir, the folks behind Castlevania and Devil May Cry, the new series is a steampunk western take on historical lawman Bass Reeves as he takes on criminals, machines, and even the supernatural to protect his family. Brian, who serves as an executive producer, plays the title character. The cast also includes Tati Gabrielle, Cree Summer, and Janelle Monae. Monae also serves as the singer behind the series’ theme song with Wondaland. Fans were treated with the first five minutes of the show along with the opening theme. Fans can see how the show unfolds when it drops on Netflix on November 3.
Next on the list is the widely popular action series Sakamoto Days, which drops its second season next year. Audiences were treated with a first look at the new season, which introduces some of the new faces that they will see in the next installment. The series continues the adventures of legendary hitman Taro Sakamoto who comes out of retirement after a hit is placed on him. Expect some new thrills and humor once the series returns in January.
The streamer introduced a new anime series called Fool Night, a dystopian sci-fi thriller taking place in a world that has plunged into eternal darkness caused by an ecological disaster. To help humanity survive in this desolated planet without oxygen, they are given a choice to turn into plants for two years under a procedure called transfloration. The new series follows protagonist Toshiro Kamiya who undergoes the transformation for a better life, but winds up in a web full of lies and conspiracies. It is the first partnership between studios Sunrise and Shaft, with the new series expecting to drop on Netflix on November 26.
The highly anticipated second season of Blue Eye Samurai got the spotlight as fans got excited to see what’s next in the story of Mizu in her quest for revenge. Audiences were given a quick sneak peak at the new season with the release date coming in January of next year. On top of that, it was announced that the conclusion of the series would come in 2028. So expect Mizu’s tale to come full circle as the series comes to a close soon.
One Piece has touched fans all around the world as the anime and live-action series on Netflix has made a global impact. Those who are new to the franchise can get to experience the story of Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates from the beginning with the anime reboot, The One Piece, which is scheduled to premiere on February 2027. Fans were also shown some merch in the form of vinyls and Legos to check out. Speaking of Legos, One Piece cast member Jacob Romero GIbson, who plays Usopp on the show, surprised audiences on stage to reveal the new Legos special coming up on the platform. The two-part animated special will adapt the first two seasons from the perspective of Usopp on Lego form. Expect that to make its way to shores on September 29.
To round out the evening, the panel ended with a first look at the newest installment of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Fans were shown the first look at the new season being dubbed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. A brand new storyline taking place in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, Trigger returns to animate the series with an all new trailer along with a new opening theme by the Cure. Fans can check out the latest series when it comes out on October 20.
