Georgetown is not polished in the usual Caribbean-resort sense, and that is part of its appeal. Wooden buildings, market chaos and broad colonial streets give it a bruised, slightly theatrical character that suits a slower, observant day.

Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda closes the route with the most obvious postcard material, but it is worth doing properly rather than treating it as a mere finale. The royal visit there coincides with the CHOGM conference in St John’s, and the island’s historic south coast is where the best day-trip material lives.
Must-see sights
Nelson’s Dockyard is the essential stop, because it gives the island a sense of scale and history that beaches alone never quite manage. Shirley Heights sits above the harbour and is best paired with the dockyard in the same outing, since the two belong together like heat and humidity. If you have a little more time, St John’s itself is worth a brief wander, but the south coast is the real reason to linger.

In fact, you would probably have to organise two separate cruises to reach all three destinations. Despite my best efforts, I have been unable to find any upcoming sailings to Guyana, so if you’re determined to reach Georgetown by sea, keep an eye on upcoming itineraries on expedition and small ship cruise lines.
