Who Is Luca Weinhandl?
Per TEAMtalk, the Sturm Graz academy graduate has emerged as one of Austria’s brightest young talents, following the national side’s impressive run under Ralf Rangnick at the 2026 World Cup. Weinhandl has nailed down a regular starting berth in central midfield this campaign, racking up close to 1,000 minutes across 13 outings while contributing a goal and an assist. Brighton, along with several Bundesliga and Serie A clubs, are also credited with interest, though Sturm Graz are unlikely to let him leave for anything less than roughly £20 million.
Why the Premier League Interest?
Arsenal’s pursuit makes sense on paper. Despite bringing in Bruno Guimaraes over the summer, Martin Zubimendi’s role has diminished sharply, and with Mikel Merino now past 30, Mikel Arteta will want a long-term option who can eventually take the reins in the engine room.
Aston Villa’s logic is similarly sound. John McGinn and Ross Barkley are both the wrong side of 30, and Unai Emery has shown a clear appetite for developing versatile, hard-working midfielders who can chip in offensively without compromising defensive discipline — a profile that fits Weinhandl neatly.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have already reshaped their midfield this year with Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba arriving to fill the void left by Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali. Joelinton’s persistent fitness troubles leave Matthias Jaissle short of depth, so a teenager with upside would be a sensible long-term addition.
A Worthwhile Gamble?
Personally, I’d argue Newcastle hold the edge here — their pathway to first-team football looks clearer than at Arsenal or Villa right now. Twenty million pounds is a hefty outlay for an unproven 17-year-old, but if even half the hype around Weinhandl is accurate, this could prove shrewd business for whoever wins the race.
