We still have a choice

We cannot choose the history we inherit, but our choices determine whether we pass along its harm or something better.

Before we excuse a lie, join in cruelty or look away, there is a moment when another choice is still possible. What we do in that moment reveals our character.

In this week’s “This Matters,” Bill Britt examines John Steinbeck’s interpretation of “timshel”—“thou mayest”—and how it illuminates the responsibility to choose, in our private lives and in public office.

Because we cannot choose the history we inherit. We can choose what we pass on.
