Animating Halloween | Yami Shibai 16 Review

Plot: The sixteenth season of the horror anthology series, Yami Shibai.

Breakdown: Season sixteen has come and gone. What did I think of this years’ horrifying entries? Let’s recap as usual.

Episode 1: Final Episode – Pretty cool episode, especially given that I love lost media and stuff in that realm. Great art style, love the vibes, really engaging, and I find it cheeky that they named the first episode of the season “Final Episode.” Kinda goofy final shot, though.

Episode 2: Research Results – Decent episode, but more confusing than scary.

Episode 3: A Peaceful Village – Meh. A little creepy, but very forgettable with a basic premise.

Episode 4: Following – A little more of a positive ‘meh.’ Would have much preferred if this were a rare wholesome episode than going for the twist at the end.

Episode 5: Gathering – The return of Ohara, this one is intriguing, but it ends on a cliffhanger that really goes nowhere (It’s possible that woman is Taro-Chan’s mother but who cares?), it’s not that spooky, and Ohara’s an ass.

Episode 6: Password – Passable episode that’s a little creepy. You might be more scared if the younger age of the main characters bothers you more. Little confusing, too.

Episode 7: Round and Around – Fairly creepy, but also insanely confusing.

Episode 8: Frozen – Very good episode, though ultimately more depressing than anything. I still can’t get over the fact that they didn’t thaw that guy.

Episode 9: Sleeper Train – A fine episode, though not very memorable in the long run.

Episode 10: Musubime-Sama – AHSKLADASHDJASDK EYE SHIT!! NOPENOPENOPENOPE

Episode 11: Dream Connection – A very confusing but intriguing episode. This one’s a bit light on the scares, but it was interesting.

Episode 12: Restoration – The first ever recurring characters crossover, I do believe, this one is. It’s a good episode, but, man, Yami Shibai just does not like letting you have even a tiny bit of information on their recurring characters or “plotlines.”

Episode 13: Conclusion – Start a season with “Final Episode” and end with “Conclusion.” You’re tempting fate, Yami Shibai. Anyway, hands down, best episode of the season. Lore crumbs, cool art, very creepy vibes, incredibly interesting premise. Well done.

So, no real stinkers this season, just some ‘mehs’ at worst. Season 16 is a winner in my book. Another collection of spooky tales to enjoy during October.

Season 17 is on the Halloween review conveyor belt, so we’ll see how that stacks up next.
