Earth Day is a natural moment to reflect—not just on long-term goals, but on the everyday choices that shape how we operate as a firm.
Over the past few years, we’ve taken steps to better understand our environmental impact and identify practical ways to reduce it. This year, our focus has been on something simple, but meaningful: how we approach everyday materials in our offices.
Moving toward more sustainable tableware
In 2026, we introduced a firm-wide initiative to transition toward more sustainable tableware across all DMCL offices.
The goal is straightforward:
- Use reusable dishes and cutlery wherever possible
- When single-use items are needed, choose compostable or recyclable alternatives
- Reduce reliance on plastic items over time through more mindful purchasing decisions
Rather than replacing everything at once, we’re taking a practical approach—using existing supplies and shifting habits as we restock and refine our processes.
Building on what’s already working
One of the advantages of being a multi-office firm is the ability to learn from each other. In this case, several of our offices were already leading the way.
- Our Surrey and Tri-Cities teams primarily use reusable kitchenware for staff meals and actively avoid single-use utensils when ordering in
- Victoria has already eliminated single-use tableware entirely in day-to-day operations
- In Vancouver, we’re building on current practices by increasing the use of reusable options and transitioning away from plastic where needed
By aligning these efforts across all locations, we’re creating a more consistent and sustainable baseline for how we operate.
Why small changes matter
Individually, decisions like switching from plastic cutlery to reusable alternatives may seem minor. But across a firm, and over time, these choices add up.
More importantly, they help reinforce a broader mindset: that sustainability isn’t just about large-scale initiatives—it’s also about the habits we build into our daily routines.
Continuing the momentum
This initiative is one step in an ongoing process. As we continue to evolve our approach, we’ll look for other opportunities to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and make more environmentally conscious decisions across the firm.
Earth Day is a reminder that progress doesn’t have to be dramatic to be meaningful. Sometimes, it starts with small, practical changes—and a shared commitment to doing better over time.
We’re making more sustainable choices where it counts—but we’ll admit, a few red solo cups may still make an appearance when it’s time for beer pong.
